Inspiron 5490 AIO, Realtek Audio Configuration

I have an Inspiron 5490 AIO with a Realtek audio module. A camera system is providing video and audio to the computer via the Ethernet interface. The video is displaying with no problem, However the audio will processed only if it is in the AAC format, not in the MP3 format. Unfortunately I need to record the audio in the MP3 format.

Is there a way to configure the Realtek Stereo Mix driver to accept and process the older MP3 format?

Thanks, Hank

OK, I've followed the instructions in both your posts,. I then verified the Reg Add, Directx, and Windows Essentials installation and execution by downloading an MP3 file created in 2013. The music processed perfectly. Unfortunately the system still will not process the MP3 audio from the camera/mike via the Ethernet port. However the system processes the AAC audio from the camera/mike perfectly.

So, unless you have a few magic wands hanging around, I'll have to go with Plan B, and buy a TV with AAC capability.

Thanks for all your patience and help, I really appreciate it.

Hank

Audio issue solved. Problem was totally operator error.

I reset the camera's audio configuration to the factory defaults. Now both the TV and the Computer are processing MP3 audio simultaneously. The factory defaults are: 44,100 Sampling Rate; and 64 Kbps Bit Rate.

I had lowered the Sampling Rate to 16,000, and Bit Rate to 32 Kbps thinking the TV and Computer would handle the lower rates more easily. Apparently the Computer's MP3 audio processing algorithm needs the higher rates before it will even recognize it as an audio stream from the Ethernet interface. Though it's also possible that the camera won't process audio for the Ethernet interface with the lower rates. Actually I don't care if it continues to work.

Also now the audio is being processed without the benefit of Windows Essentials which I had uninstalled. The additions to the Registry and Directx are still installed which may be a benefit.

Will whatever audio player you are using play any MP3's?  I do a lot of audio as I have a recording studio and Realtek for PC audio but have not run across any MP3 incompatibilities.

For recording streaming audio, I use Goldwave (an audio recorder/playback/editor). Audacity should do it too.

My application is for a church. We have a camera and shotgun mike to record services for two destinations. First is to record and post weekly services to the church website for shut-ins, hospital patients, and travelers. This should be no problem with the AAC format. The second is to remote a service to a TV in the Parish Hall for overflow attendees of special services and funerals. Unfortunately the TV, being older, will not accept the AAC format, only MP3.

One option is to buy a new TV that accepts the AAC format. Though I was hoping to avoid that expense if I could downgrade the Realtek module and driver to accept MP3.

Edit: The camera computer interface is via Ethernet. The camera TV interface is via HDMI. I tried to split the HDMI between the two destinations, but the splitter blocked the audio to both destinations. Also the video recording system I have won't record the HDMI input, only the Ethernet input.

Realtek audio does not interface as a recording device via ethernet.

MP3 codec (Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec) is no longer part of windows. Nor is movie maker or the legacy Directx interface.

l3codecp.acm is a module belonging to Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Audio Layer-3 ACM codec from Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen IIS.

It is not enabled  but it can be enabled in windows registry entries.

For x64 systems just do this on windows registry

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/reg-add

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\drivers.desc" /v "%SYSTEMROOT%\SysWOW64\l3codecp.acm" /t REG_SZ /d "Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Audio Layer-3 Codec (professional)" /f

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32" /v "msacm.l3acm" /t REG_SZ /d "%SYSTEMROOT%\SysWOW64\l3codecp.acm" /f

I think replacing the TV probably is the best option.

Your side note is amusing. Our priest plays bass in his band, and the lead guitar is the priest of the other Episcopal church in town.

Thank you Speedstep, I'll enter that tomorrow.

I'm sure this will solve the issue. If it doesn't, Plan B is to buy a replacement TV, and (hopefully) find a benevolent church member who is looking for a tax write-off, LOL

Edit: That's what I like about this Community. There always will be someone who is knowledgeable about specific details way down in the deep primitives. I used to be, but that was 50-60 years ago when I was writing very primitive  code in assembly, sometimes in binary, long before compilers. I thank all of you for your continuing support of our industry.

The hardware version of the Realtek chip will limit what driver and functions are available.

One option that may work is to use a USB connected sound device that will handle MP3 instead of using the Realtek.  I haven't researched what is available but most likely one is available.  The other option is, as you mentioned, replacing the TV and repurposing it to some other use.

As a side note, I play Pedal Steel Guitar in our local Cowboy Church band.

Speedstep, when I enter Reg Add, Run as Administrator, nothing happens. Though Reg Edit, Run as Administrator executes normally.

What authorization must I enter to execute Reg Add?

Thanks, Hank

Once the REG add is run in Admin Command prompt you re start and it should be done.

You then go into control panel and ADD FEATURES to windows to add back Legacy Direct play and Media Features aka Windows media player.

You must then download and install directx June 2010.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

you download the file then extract into a folder.

Then run DXSETUP.EXE as administrator.

This is not a one click water chicken install.

You must then download Windows live Essentials 2012 to reinstall windows movie maker.

Although Windows Essentials is not supported (won't get any updates) anymore, you still can download the offline installer. During the installation you can choose which programs you want to install.

Windows Essentials latest version 16.4.3528.0331:

English (United States)

http://web.archive.org/web/20170112124505/http://wl.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/C/1/B/C1BA42D6-6A50-4A4A-90E5-FA9347E9360C/en/wlsetup-all.exe

You can then test download an MP3 file and see if it plays in Windows media player.

1.  Enable Legacy Direct play in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features \Turn Windows Features on or Off. Also enable Dotnet 2.0 3.5 in the same place.

2.  Download DirectX June 2010  Extract to a folder and Run DXSETUP.EXE as administrator.

3. Download and install the Latest Drivers for your video card.

4.  Run the Game in Directx 9 mode not Directx 11 mode.

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

  • Your hard disk drive does not have sufficient space available to play
  • The Microsoft Windows paging file is corrupted.
  • The version of INTEL HD Graphics does not have DX9,DX10 dll's installed aka Direct X June 2010.  Windows 8.1 has directx 11.1

You have to enable Legacy Direct play and Direct X June 2010

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260183

You download the file and extract to a FOLDER not desktop and run DXsetup.exe as administrator.

DX11 is not as compatible as people may have thought.

You either have an unsupported video card, overheating card or don’t have the latest drivers and or Directx June 2010 installed.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

With windows 8.x you also have to enable Legacy Direct Show and DOTNET 2.0 3.5

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features

Turn Windows Features on or Off

You need to do this while you are online because it will say it cant find the software.  You then tell it to get the Legacy components online from windows update.  It will take a while.

Thanks. I'll print your instructions at home then come back and execute them.

Is there anything else beyond these instructions that I need to perform?
