dell dimension 2400 windows xp sp2 hard drive backup
i think my hard drive is failing and i would like to make an exact copy of my hard drive onto an external hard drive. i'd like to use the external one as my main one when the original dies, or use it to put the information onto a new internal hard drive so that i don't have to reinstall windows from scratch losing all my personal adjustments and programs.
i am having trouble finding an external hard drive that is compatible with windows xp sp2, uses 2.0 usb cord, and third party cloning software that can run on xp sp2. does anyone have any suggestions?

First off dimension 2400 uses IDE drives.
That means any drive would have to be VERY OLD.
Cloning this type of Drive works fine with Norton Ghost.
You will need non advanced format drive of 120 GIGS or LESS in size from 2011 or earlier.
clonezilla

would also have no issues making a copy nor would macrium reflect free version.

All drives in this system MUST BE jumpered CABLE Select and you MUST USE 80 wire Ide cables.

Blue connector goes to motherboard.
Black connector is boot drive
Grey Connector is 2ND drive.

i think it'd be easier for me to just buy a new hard drive - yes it's from 2004! - that i can buy on amazon. then reinstall windows and rejigger it to my liking and then reinstall my programs and put my personal files back on.
do i need to buy new cables with a new hd as well?
i hope to just keep replacing the worn out bits, especially the dell monitor.

New cables are not required. The standard cable for this unit usually only has one hard drive on it.
Nobody carries or makes IDE drives now except amazon and ebay etc.
Drives larger than 120 gigs will be a problem due to 48 bit logical block addressing.

80 gig drives will be the easiest to find.

ALL DRIVES should be Jumpered to CABLE Select.
NOT MASTER
NOT SLAVE
