Not again...

Did you disable Wake On LAN in BIOS setup as I suggested the last time?

Do you see any signs of a crash when it restarts? Look in Windows Event Viewer around the time of a shutdown and restart. If something is crashing during the shutdown, Windows may be doing an automatic "restart after crash".

Try this: Power off and unplug power cord from rear of PC. Press/hold power button on PC for ~30 sec. Then reconnect power cord to rear of PC and monitor for this issue.

And see if there's anything helpful here.

Hi RoHe,

I didn't try the LAN thing--  YET but when you say  power off, how do you do that? press the power button in the front of the tower?  Also, where and how does one access the windows event viewer? I'm not familiar with this, ---- crash?  I can tell you that, as described before, everything seems fairly "normal," in the sense no crash--  monitor goes dark, but the lights on the tower blink, as if "fighting" the " off command"-- then, solid color, and the music plays and the monitor-- comes back to life, as "on"-- right now, and for several days, at my wife's suggestion, the PC is in sleep mode...

What LED is blinking when you shut down, power button, hard drive activity LED, optical drive activity LED? If it's the HDD LED, that's normal because Windows has to save its "Fast Startup" file which will speed up the next boot.

"Power off" = Shut Windows down normally and PC will power off. Then disconnect power cord from rear of PC....

If that doesn't help, disable Wake on LAN next in BIOS setup, if not already disabled...

Event Viewer: Click Start>Search: type in: Event Viewer. When it appears in the results, click to open it. Expand Windows Logs in left pane and click Application. Look in right pane around time of a shutdown and reboot for either a Warning or Error.  Double-click to open for details.

Then, under Windows Logs in left pane, click System and look in right pane around the time of a shutdown and reboot for either a Warning or Error.  Double-click to open for details...

You can also try disabling Fast Startup:

  1. Boot to desktop
  2. Open Power & Sleep screen
  3. Click Additional power settings
  4. Click Change what power buttons do
  5. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  6. UNcheck Turn on fast startup
  7. Click Save changes
  8. Do a full shutdown, not just a Restart from inside Windows
  9. Power on and boot normally
  10. See if these restarts continue
