Long story SHORT................You do  not want to do any recommended updates or updates period, from dell automated notices...etc.  You do not want to change any original installed hardware or software that were originally TESTED for YOUR specific laptop.   You do at your own risk........  Warning:

Further to what Teetertotter just wrote, I would strongly advise against having DellAssist (or anything Dell, for that matter) on your computer. Their automated systems broke my Windows (by pushing a BIOS update, without letting me know first what was being installed). After going through all this, I started to check for updates "manually", from time to time. Is this OK? Definitely not, as an important security update can be skipped or delayed.
Anyway, as a result of that unintended update, I couldn't boot into Windows anymore, and had to reinstall the OS. I wasted tons of time (talking to these people on the phone, trying to figure out the best course of action (first agreed to send the laptop in, then my infosec senses kicked in), writing emails (and getting their replies from time to time), making the installation media, getting my data out, talking to Dell again, reinstalling Windows finally, installing the correct drivers, then discovering the fingerprint scanner wasn't working and having to go back to Dell, ...). All of this without counting the apps that I had to reinstall and set up, passwords I had to recall, so forth...
Problem is the (intended?) lack of transparency - they don't tell you upfront about implications of updating BIOS without their live rep telling you to do so. Nor do they tell you about it before or during the update - they just have this automated software try to push it, and that's it. This is something I can't understand, and I'm just lost wondering... Is this part of their business development? Asked them the question in this forum, no response so far (which doesn't surprise me).

Additional information on the BIOS exe failure.

Yesterday, I downloaded the file Inspiron_3153_3158_7353_7359_7568_1.22.0.exe.

When I double-click on the exe, I get a Windows dialog box asking me if I want to allow the app to make changes to my device.  I click on Yes.  I then get the spinner mouse pointer for a few seconds and that's it.  I don't get the usual BIOS window and the BIOS loading doesn't happen.

I *think* perhaps a recent Microsoft update may have impacted the BIOS update program from running.

I have the temp files as mentioned in the Application Event Log, but this UI doesn't seem to have the ability to attached files?

In the Event Viewer Application Log I found:

Firstly - thanks to everyone for their advice.

The first time I re-installed the BIOS [which was the same version as that on my machine] I did so after searching for answers to get the audio jack working after a Windows update broke it.

Re-installing the existing BIOS version worked like a charm.  Each time a Windows update broke it [not all updates broke it, only the more major updates], I simply re-installed the BIOS and the audio jack worked.

This time, when the Windows major update broke the audio jack, I decided to see if there was a more recent BIOS update - and there was.  Yes, I did try to install the newer version of the BIOS - which was unsuccessful.

So then I tried to re-install the existing BIOS - and that failed as well.  So Microsoft have changed something fundamental to installing BIOS on this device.

This morning, after my device has been powered off overnight, the audio jack is now working.

So I'm not playing around with the BIOS again.

I still think that this is something that Dell needs to investigate.

That's right unbiosed.  No matter who the manufacture, you should not try and change the original tested set-up.  If you have a Nvidia or AMD graphics card, then to update, you use their website to download the latest driver, which I do.

There should be a sticky on this forum to inform those of the possible disasters, if they want to do ANY driver updates.  People need to know this as a kept DELL SECRET, to cause problems.
