Adding an m.2 SSD to a 3493

I have a brand new Inspiron 3493 equipped with a mechanical HDD. I was planning to replace this before first boot with a 2.5" SSD but was delighted to find an empty m.2 slot on removing the laptop's base cover. The model's 'Setup and Specs' document reads:

"

Storage

Your computer is shipped with one of the following configurations:

•One M.2 solid-state drive

•One 2.5-inch hard drive

...

"

I took this to mean I might be able to avoid the 2.5" hardware completely and just use an m.2 SSD. Alas I then found this in the model's service manual, which makes mention of a drive shield which "is only available for computers that are shipped with" an SSD. I do have a never-used heatsink that came with my desktop's m.2 SSD, and wonder whether the two are functionally similar. I also see that the m.2 SSD that appears in this video on the Official Dell Tech Support YouTube channel has no such shield.

Any suggestions as to how to best proceed would be very welcome!

A heat sink (shield is another name) is being used lately for M.2 equipped systems. I have an Inspiron 5575 without a shield and find no problem with heat issues on my system. And you are correct in that the desktop M.2 is the same as the laptop M.2. Heat sinks are available at most PC shops and of course at Amazon. If you want to install one, and it is not a requirement, then make sure it is very low profile. Something along this line would work.
