I'm having this same issue, the screen brightness drops all the way down when unplugged and becomes essentially unusable, which is a huge pain. Every solution is something that either doesn't appear in my settings, or it's a driver I've already downloaded. FN keys do nothing for this.

This link has a lot of information but look at the section on auto brightness when plugged in.
