Unplug the system, remove the base cover and disconnect the battery from the system board.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.

Reconnect the battery and check again.

if the battery is detected, you're set. If not, you will need to replace it -- though it does not require a repair shipment;  on just about all Dell systems, the battery is user-replaceable.  If you don't want to replace it yourself, parts-people.com can likely supply the battery and replace it for a flat fee.

Thanks for the suggestion, seems to have cleared the issue. Fingers crossed it's permanent!
