If you plug an external microphone, it will replace the internal microphone, nothing will show up for that microphone. In the "sound - manage audio devices - recording", if you speak in the microphone, did you see the meter at the right reacts to the sound ?
Also try this Open your Realtek HD Audio Manager, on right side double click on your port icon and select Mic In then OK.
