DELL G7 7588 Touchpad Issues

Hey people!

So, I've owned the Dell G7 7588 for over 8 months now, and so far no hitches; temperatures are very respectable, minimal BSOD errors, battery life and performance with the latest BIOS update is good...there's just one severe gremlin that if I had paid more attention going into it could've been a deal-breaker: the trackpad.

Now, don't get me wrong, the trackpad is nice and spacious, with a good feel and responsive gestures, however that is only IF it is working. Multitouch on my unit always deactivates itself when I put the computer to sleep and wake it up again, then I end up fiddling with the drivers and restarting the machine until I'm finally able to get multitouch working again (a touchpad is pretty much useless without multitouch).

Other times the touchpad will just outright go to sleep completely once you wake up the machine, after which when the computer is restarted you are guaranteed not to have multitouch.

This has really been bugging me about this machine for months now, and I honestly think if I knew there was this issue going into my laptop search I would have definitely looked elsewhere. Any (permanent) fix for this will be highly appreciated!

So, I finally came up with a solution to this problem. If you have the same issue I cannot guarantee that it will work, but it should help. Download the generic synaptics drivers via this link: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/drivers/essentials/synaptics-touchpad-windows-10/ Go into Device Manager, and then look for your "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" or similar option under "Mouse and other Pointing devices" Look for the extracted driver folder on your computer after selecting the "Have Disk" option. This will swap out the Microsoft Precision drivers for synaptics drivers. Also, disable the I2C HID Device in Human Interface Devices. Restart your machine. The touchpad should be working, albeit with noticeably worse response. In device manager, the touchpad should show up as "Dell Touchpad" select it and swap out these drivers with the PS/2 Compatible Mouse drivers from earlier. Also, re-enable the I2C HID Device. Restart your machine once more and your touchpad should work normally without any hitches, even after putting the machine to sleep.

If you just uninstall the I2c Hid device the touchpad will work just fine. It may fail again and if it does I would recommend taking it in and getting it replaced with the warranty.

I tried doing this and it didn't fix the problem. Is there any other solution that I could try?

Hey @Luidex

I have owned Dell Vostro 14 3491 before one year. last month I was facing a touchpad issue in that i was searching for a solution for that but did not get any solution. then my friend suggests me to update the drivers. then i have searched a lot and got a post about touchpad drivers i.e - https://blogs.innovanathinklabs.com/reinstall-update-touchpad-drivers/. I have gone through this post and download the driver updater. In sometime my drivers got updated and my touchpad started working. I would suggest you to the same.

I hope it will help you

Thanks
