Dell G3 3779

Good day. I have a big request. I have had this Dell G3 3779 laptop for three years and have been very satisfied.
My daughter was taking her laptop to bed and it probably overheated. Now if I turn it on with the ON button, the keyboard lights up where the caps lock is active and cannot be deactivated. It seems that the keyboard is not working. Next, the screen backlight turns on and immediately turns off, this happens periodically. After a minute, the fans start up and then turn off periodically again. Nothing appears on the Screen. Please advise or point out what fault could have occurred. Thank you very much Peter.

System reset:  Power off, unplug and remove the base cover.

Disconnect the battery from the system board.

Hold the power button for 30 sec.

Remove and reinstall the memory module(s) and SSD/hard drive.

Reconnect the battery and try powering up again.

Thanks for the response. I tried the instructions but nothing changed. Does this motherboard have any error messages like a desktop PC. How to find out what is wrong.

If the system still won't power up, the mainboard needs to be replaced.  Mainboards are so tightly packed with components that just identifying a failed part can take hours or longer -- never mind the task of repair (which ranges from impossible to exceedingly difficult at best).

Depending on the CPU and GPU, the boards range from $350-700 -- you won't get one repaired for less than that.

How much would this motherboard cost without work - Dell G3 17 Gaming (3779), Intel Core i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 2TB HDD, GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

$500-600 or so on EBay; probably $100 more from a supplier that will offer a year warranty (most EBay sellers are DOA warranty or up to 90 days at most).

Thank you very much for the info, I'm already looking at the prices, but before that I'll take a multimeter and an oscilloscope and dig around a bit, it can always be thrown out.

That leaves several questions:

1. Can you find a schematic for purchase so you can figure out what that was?  (try www.laptop-schematics.com.

2.  If you can identify the part, you'll then need to source it.  Unless you live in southeast China, that may not be easy.  Many repair shops keep stocks of otherwise dead boards for parts harvesting;  you may wind up having to buy an otherwise dead board to source the replacement component.

3.  Do you have the tools and expertise to do surface-mount soldering (i.e., a hot air station)?

4.  Are you willing to risk the funds on the schematic and parts, without knowing why that component failed (if something else that's not evidently damaged caused the failure, a replacement will simply fail again;  you also have no way to know what damage was done to the board itself)?

If you have to pay for labor to replace the part, it will wind up costing enough that a board replacement will make more sense -- bear in mind that anyone with the skills to do the repair will charge a minimum of a few hundred dollars to try, and many won't even try given all the uncertainty over a repair.

There is a very strong possibility you'll spend hundreds on a repair only to have that fail and need to replace the board anyway.

Though it's your judgement as to the path forward, carefully consider that board repair is not an exact science.  Mainboards are laminated layers designed to be assembled by robots -- they simply are not easily repairable by human hands.
