Dell G7 15 - 7588

Jump to solution

Hi guys! Sorry my bad english!

One week ago i buy Dell G7 15 - 7588, with i9 Processor, GTX 1060, 16GB RAM, and 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD.

128GB SSD have SATA AHCI interface, and for this interface 128GB it is maximum (this write in official manual), but it's to small for me.

In Dell manual (in the picture below) I see PCIe interface can Up to 1TB and my question: "If I buy Samsung 970 PRO 512GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD, Can I install it, will it work ?! Can SATA AHCI and NVMe be plugged to the same M.2 interface type ?!

Sorage Specifications

Thank you very much in advance!

Yes, that NVMe drive will work in this system.

Next question: Is NVMe running in the GT4 mode (3,6 Gb/s) or are you limited to GT2 (1.8 GB/s)?
If it is using GT2 mode only, Samsung 970 PRO is overkill (imho...), because the r/w speed will be max: 1.8 GB/S

Historically speaking, most Inspiron and (until the current generation) XPS models are GT2.  Since your G7 is a rebadged Inspiron -- expect it to run in GT2 mode.

Thanks you! That's meen, i can buy Samsung 970 EVO 500GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD not a PRO ? And save 30$ 🙂 And one more question: "Can i do Optane Memory on this laptop?" In manual (in picture below) said: "7th Generation or higher Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processor", but i have "8th Generation Intel Core i9". Support i9 optane memory options ?

The standard version (non-Pro) is likely fine.  As for Optane - even if the system supported it (I don't think it does, at least not yet) -- why on Earth would you want to run a cached hard drive as opposed to a native SSD?

Optane is a fancy name for a hard drive cache - no cached hard drive will come anywhere near what a true, native SSD can deliver.

Thank you very much friend. So I just buy the Samsung 970 EVO 500GB - NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 SSD and Seagate 2TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb / s 128MB Cache 2.5-Inch 7mm Internal Hard Drive (because HDD is also too small) and clone the license windows.

And one more question, can I change the panel of the screen in the future? At purchase I basically looked at technical characteristics, and on quality of the screen did not pay special attention. For games, the screen is fine, but for working with graphics is not very suitable. The screen at me such: 1920х1080, 250nt, RGB 73%, Adobe RGB 56%. Before that, I had Dell XPS 15 L502x (2012-2013 year) and there the screen was better. On new Dell XPS (2017-2018) very good screen, can i change in soon future my screen panel, or i can do it right now ? I want something like: 1920х1080, 380nt, RGB 96%, Adobe RGB 99%.

P.S. Do not ask me, why i just did not buy Dell XPS 🙂 Ultrabook and my requirements not compatible.

P.S. Sorry my english.

Screen upgrades may or may not be possible.  Notebooks work only with those screens shipped by the manufacturer - you cannot just swap in a panel based on specification.
