Dell Inspiron 7472 sometimes doesn't power up (error code 133)

Hello,

I have an Inspiron 7472 from 2018 that has been having intermittent problems with booting up. Sometimes it will turn on from pressing the power button, other times it will not. I will typically have to spend anywhere between a few seconds to a few minutes pressing the button to get it to start up. I ran a diagnostics and it showed me error code 133 (Battery – the battery cannot provide sufficient power). Since I no longer rely on this laptop for portable use, I removed the battery entirely to see if that would bypass the issue. With the AC adapter connected, the laptop still has this intermittent problem with not starting up from pressing the power button. Given all of this, I am wondering if there is a point in getting a new battery, or if this is a bigger problem with the motherboard.

Thank you

The odds are it's not just the battery -- were there any messages about failure to detect the AC adapter (which could be a bad DC plug or jack)?

If you haven't tried a system reset -- with the power disconnected, hold the power button for 30 sec, remove and reinstall the memory module(s) and then try powering up -- that's a good thing to try as well.

Hey ejn63,

Thanks for the quick response. There were no messages about failure to detect the AC adapter. The light on the adapter is on when plugged in and has no problems when plugged in to my other Inspiron.

I haven't tried removing and reinstalling the memory modules. Do I just go in and take out and put back in the RAM?

In my cases in past few years I have seen this behavior due to both Bad power button assembly as well as Motherboard.

Although Wont recommend using the computer on AC adapter only unless you have a UPS/ Inverter. A slight power surge for a second and all of your work gone. Unless you are getting the battery at a reasonable cost and your notebook is performing (prior of these issues) as per your needs, I don't see any need of spending more on a 4 year old notebook.

It most probably out of warranty. Put that battery back in and keep it Turned on all the time, Disable Hibernation and use sleep, this will eliminate the need of power button.

It might be that the issue is caused due to faulty RAM/ Video card. That is the reason I suggested you to update the drivers from the manufacturers website. For this error message, you should contact Dell support.
