Discrete GPU not enabled with D6000 dock and ext. monitors

Hi,

I have a very annoying issue that is happening whenever I try to use software that uses my discrete NVIDIA GPU when my D6000 dock is plugged in.

I can use all my software (CAD and modeling) that makes use of the high-end Discrete GPU on my laptop, no problem. But when I plug in my D6000 dock that has 2 U2415 monitors attached to it and try to load the same software, they all only use the default low-end integrated graphics card...

To be able to use the dock and software at the same time I have to unplug the dock, load the software I want to use, and then plug it back in again to make sure the software is using the high-end discrete GPU that my laptop has.

I have tried to disable the integrated graphics card to force it to use the discrete GPU but that really messes with my display and actually disables the use of external monitors..

Anyone know why this is happening, and how to fix it? I just don't understand why this would be happening..

@moovme  It’s because the D6000 uses DisplayLink “indirect display” technology, and Windows has a limitation with that technology. Read the post marked of mine that’s marked as the answer in this thread for more info: https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/Docking-Station-D6000-Very-Bad-Video-performance-for-gaming/td-p/6193369

Unfortunately you didn’t specify what system model you’re using, but if you want an alternate dock, you’d probably want a WD19 or WD19TB.

@moovme  One quick note in addition to my above reply. On most systems with discrete GPUs these days, the display outputs are still wired to the Intel GPU, with the discrete GPU operating as a render-only device that passes video through the Intel GPU. NVIDIA calls this technology NVIDIA Optimus. There are benefits and drawbacks to this design, and some laptops have some or all display outputs wired directly to the discrete GPU or even a BIOS option allowing you to choose which GPU controls the display outputs, but those are rare. In any case, if you have a system that has outputs wired to the Intel GPU, then that‘s why you can’t disable that GPU and get a satisfactory result.

Well,

I wish I'd known about this absolutely critical information about the device prior to purchasing. Dell really should be very clear about this issue up front when selling docks. Not impressed. Now I'm stuck with a $$$ paperweight.

I guess there is no workaround either, and I'm going to have to throw down another $300+ for a WD19 to plug into my only USBC port..

Wow, I'm disappointed

@moovme  Sorry I didn’t have better news for you. But what system are you using? Not all USB-C ports actually have a native GPU output wired to them. The D6000 doesn’t need one since it uses DisplayLink, but the WD19 will. So before you spend more money, make sure your system will actually be able to use it.

My system is an HP ENVY x360 15" with 17-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz - 2.0GHz. It has an NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 4GB VRAM discrete GPU.

Do you know if my GPU is connected to my USBC port?..

@moovme  Ok, I'm not very familiar with HP's product line, but you'd want to check its specs to see if it's USB-C port mentions support for DisplayPort Alt Mode or something along those lines.  If it supports Thunderbolt 3, then it will also support DisplayPort Alt Mode because that support is mandatory for TB3.  Although if your system supports TB3, you might want to look at the WD19TB if you might want a dock that would support more than your current dual 1080p display setup you have today.  Or honestly if you're using an HP system, you might want to look at HP's docks.  I know they have a Thunderbolt 3 dock that seems solid, but I'm not sure about USB-C.

@fkiddle  The Precision 5500 Series models are sister systems of the XPS 15 models, which are compatible with the WD19TB, so yes the 5540 would be compatible as well.

@jphughan I'm having the exact same issue here using Solidworks on a Precision 5540 mobile workstation with Quadro T2000 GPU. Do you know if this system is compatible with WD19TB? I'm going to get one of those and hope that it resolves the issue. I know my system has Thunderbolt 3.0.

@jphughan I have just received my new WD19 with USBC connectivity. It works perfectly as it should, and allows all my CAD and modelling software to run natively using the NVIDIA discrete GPU on my external monitors.

Anyone need a D6000?..

@tbonepolar  As far as I know, this is still an inherent limitation of DisplayLink-based docks, at least when used on Windows systems that have multiple GPUs.  If your system would support a different dock model, you may have to get one of those instead, or else connect your display(s) directly to your system rather than through the dock if possible.

Hey, I am having the same issue, did you ever find a fix?

June 29th, 2021 14:00

Well, I had it working a month ago and it suddenly stopped working which is strange to me.

@tbonepolar  Maybe a driver and/or Windows update changed something.  But as a general bit of advice, when you resurrect a thread that began about a year ago, has been dormant for six months, and included a fair number of posts from multiple users, it can help to be more specific about your issue than just saying you're having "the same issue".  For example, maybe provide information such as your system model, DisplayLink software version, and what application(s) are exhibiting what specific behavior

Sadly, I do think it is a driver issue, but reverting versions has not fixed it yet. As far as being more descriptive. I feel like I have been descriptive enough when I say the exact same issue. I am on the same docking station and working with the same programs. The issue described is my exact issue to the t.
