Fingerprint driver code 31

Inspiron 5515

Inspiron 5515

In the past week my fingerprint driver hasn't been working consistently. I get the following error in device manger

"

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API."

A restart temporarily fixes it, but a few hours later the error returns. I've reinstalled the driver with no help.

Thanks in advance

Fix a Code 31 Error
Restart your computer if you haven't done so already. The Code 31 error could source from a temporary memory glitch.

Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 31 error appeared? If so, it's possible that the change you made caused the Code 31 error.

Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 31 error.

Roll back the driver to a version prior to your updates.

Use System Restore to undo recent Device Manager-related changes.

Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values. A common cause of Code 31 errors is the corruption of two registry values in the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class registry key.

I'd start with updating the chipset driver if you have not done so.

That's interesting. I recently had a problem with my Fingerprint Driver not working also - ended up fully reinstalling Windows (I happened to have another reason for doing so) and that seemed to fix it. I am not recommending you reinstall Windows. Are you using an Insider Build of Windows 11 by any chance? or the regular Windows 11?

Quesion - next time your fingerprint sensor glitches out, open Device Manager and see if any of the USB ports/hubs are not working right. Almost a year ago I had to have tech support replace the fingerprint sensor, they ended up replacing the whole laptop. It was a problem with the USB port that the fingerprint scanner was plugged into, and it warranted replacment hardware.
