Fingerprint reader unresponsive after BIOS update

I have an Inspiron 14 5000 (5482) 2-in-1 with Intel Core i3, 4GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

Today I saw an update for the BIOS (ver. 2.3.0, mine was 2.2.0) and decided to install it. No problems during installation, everything was normal until I tried to login after the reboot. The fingerprint scanner did not detect my fingerprint at all, as usually I'd at least get the "your device did not recognize you" message.

I logged in with PIN and checked Device Manager: the Goodix fingerprint driver was normal but (as I found out later) the System controllers > Intel(R) Software Guard Extensions Device was missing. Windows Hello was normal, my fingerprint data was still there but it couldn't read mine or add new ones. Checked BIOS settings for the Intel SGX settings and they were already Enabled.

After racking my brain for an hour, I decided to just revert to the previous BIOS version (2.2.0) and voila, the fingerprint reader was back to normal. So, it's either a problem with just my system, or with the BIOS update itself. Wondering if others have had such an issue before, and if yes, well BIOS reversion worked for me.

And I have the same problem, I think the problem is in bios.I did the same thing back to bios on old version 2.2.0 and fingerprint returned to normal

Figured I'd pop a message here to say I also face the same issue, though I haven't downgraded bios yet.

Also on a 5482, where the update to 2.3.0 seems to be the issue.

Same here with Inspiron . I already try to remove and add the device, but it still doesn't work. Maybe a bios downgrade, but I will wait for a solution Dell side.

Same issue after this BIOS update for my Inspiron 5482 2-in-1.

Attempting to install the Intel Software Guard Extensions complains about the BIOS not supporting Intel SGX. Confirmed in BIOS that Intel SGX is set to enabled. Tried Software Controlled as well and along with Disabled. Nothing makes a difference.

Downgraded to BIOS 2.2.0. Intel SGX set to enabled, still cannot properly install Intel SGX. Reinstalled Windows on 2.2.0, working fine.

Upgraded to BIOS 2.3.0, broken Fingerprint reader again. Same issues about Intel SGX not being enabled.

Clean installed Windows on 2.3.0, issue remains, cannot install Intel SGX.

Did anyone at Dell test this basic functionality before rolling this out? Now anyone that updates to BIOS 2.3.0 is **bleep** in regards to the fingerprint sensor.

I have the same problem after updating the BIOS on my brand new Inspiron 5482. The fingerprint scanner no longer works after I updated. This is a BIOS issue and Dell needs to check for basic issues like these before releasing the update.

Exactly the same problem with my Dell 2in1 5482 following BIOS "urgent" update yesterday. I looked in the new BIOS settings and there does not appear to be a setting to enable the fingerprint scanner. DELL needs to find a fix and make this available; users should not need to have to roll back the BIOS.....an update that keeps the functions of the latest one without affecting the fingerprint scanner functionality please DELL!!

SJD65,

Click the link below to download the drivers for the fingerprint reader. The install instructions are listed on the driver download page.

The problem is not the driver but the BIOS itself. The 2.3 version is no longer listed on the driver page. Maybe Dell already saw that the BIOS has a problem and pulled it out. Maybe they will release a new version soon... hopefully .

I did this for my Vostro 5581 but no luck. I downloaded the driver from this page:

No changes. We need a hot fix from Dell.
