G15 5511 2nd M.2 Drive Issues

I have got a Dell G15 5511 (Intel i7 1180h, geforce 3060 rtx, 16gb ddr4 memory, etc) that I really enjoy using but doesn’t seem to like my second m.2 drive.

Laptop came with only one drive - 512mb PCIe Gen3 NVMe.  I installed in the empty slot a 1TB Gen4 NVMe - WD SN850.  I realized I was in getting gen 3 speeds with the gen4 drive in that slot so I switched slots.  The gen3 drive is in the second slot and the gen4 drive is in the primary slot.  When the gen4 drive displays it shows it as gen4 speeds per crystal mark, however the drive disappears in Windows from time to time.

I read this language in the G15 5511 Setup and Specifications - “NOTE: If you have ordered only one solid-state drive, it can be upgraded to the solid-state drive of the same form factor but an additional solid-state drive is not supported. If you have ordered two solid-state drives, they can be upgraded to the solid-state drives of the same form factor respectively.”

Does this mean I can only use one slot in my laptop? That would be very frustrating.  Please let me know if you have any ideas.  I’ve tried updating the chipset and firmware for both the bios and the drive.  Drive is detected consistently in the bios without fail.

Thanks.

Only our own Dell RAM has been and can be tested on our laboratory.

I mean, we can confirm only our own Dell RAM compatibility.

I recommend you to buy our compatible own Dell RAM for your computer.

after 24h it seems to be unstable.

That is unfortunate to hear. Again, hopefully Dell will provide a fix for this issue. It seems to be a Dell problem as neither Western Digital or Samsung drives appear to work correctly in the Dell 5511.

We aren't talking about RAM here, we are discussing SSD drives. These are industry standard parts that should be expected to work in a high end laptop. It's not like it is an Apple product...

That is how I have mine setup as well and like yours, it is stable and has similar speeds.

In Bios 1.8 same problems, dont work stable. System freeze, boot failure, bluescreen.

...tired of switching nvme slots

I envy you since you once got Gen4 performance on slot0 using WD SN850. I could not get any Gen4 result at all.

My findings;

Intel® Core™ i7-11800H Processor supports PCIe Gen4 for processor-direct 20 lanes (Gen4 x20). Assuming the discrete graphic card RTX3060 uses 16 lanes (Gen4 x16), only Ge4 x4 remain. And, its chipset (PHC) HM570 supports additional 16 PCIe lanes up to Gen3, no Gen4 lanes at all.

Therefore, G15 5511 should support only one PCIe Gen4 (PCIe4 x4) SSD at most.

Hence, I hoped at least M2 slot0 would support PCLe Gen4, so that I tried to replace the original SSD to Gen4 one. But BIOS did not recognize the replaced Gen4 SSD at all. Fortunately, it is recognized as Gen3 SSD on slot1 at least. It maybe my specifc problem on Gen4 SSD from ADATA.

Anyhow, I'm in a mood for giving up getting Gen4 SSDs to work on G15 5511. I will use my Gen4 SSD for the next PC I would buy, from the vendors who offer adequate information for what they are selling.

I have found that RTX3060 graphic interface for G15 5511 is PCIe Gen4 x8, not x16, to further my disappointment. I found this by using CPU-Z software.

Does anyone know how the other PCIe Gen4 12 lanes are used?

Hello, thank you for the information. I would be able to help you in this situation but I'm not able to solve this problem. Therefore I hope that device will not cause any problems from now.

To bring a little light into the darkness...

The PCIe slots for graphics card and slot 0 NVMe have the following properties.

And here is the data for the second NVMe/SSD slot. (Unused at the moment)

If you use a supported NVMe, you also get the full performance range. In this case a Crusial/Micron P5 Plus 1TB PCIe M.2 2280SS SSD (CT1000P5PSSD8) in slot 0.

Tested with BIOS version 1.8 (1.8.1)

Thanks for the info. What app are you using to display that system information?

Is there a list of supported drives for the 5511 posted somewhere?

I had answered you yesterday, as you can see the answer is no longer there. Dell seems not to have liked this and has deleted my message without giving any reason. Thus, this is also my last message here in the forum, a platform on which without specification and notification of the user contributions are censored I can not and will not support.
