G5 5587 Keyboard Problems
I have been having some problems with my keyboard on my Dell G5 5587 laptop. A column of keys have stopped working: 2,w,s,x. Recently I replaced the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU (nightmare). In the process I had to unplug all the ribbon cables and then plug them back in later. I have since used canned air to clean the ribbon cable and the connector and I have re-seated the cable at least three times to to no avail. However the keys aren't completely dead. I have noticed that sometimes If I hold down one of the non-functional keys and press the key to the right of it (for example hold down s and press d) it will work. Also if I do this enough and tap the non-functional keys enough they can temporarily start working again, however they sometimes stop working again and they always seem to stop working after I restart or go into and back out of sleep mode. I have also tried reinstalling drivers twice and it doesn't do anything. A new keyboard isn't that much but replacing it is a huge pain in the *** for this laptop. Because of me working on the laptop recently and since it is a whole column, part of me thinks it is a hardware problem, but since it didn't happen for a few weeks afterwards and came on slowly and because of them working sometimes part of me thinks it is a software problem. Anyone else had this problem before? Any advise? Also how much would it cost to send it to dell to be fixed of of warranty?

Hi, Emiliano
Go to the web link:
https://www.dell.com/support/home
and choose a "Dettagli del prodotto: Visualizza configurazione del sistema".
after find a part with name "keybord QWERTY IT". Click it, and you will see a part number of your keyboard.

I also have the same problem after the warranty ended since then my keyboard keys (f1, W, S, X, capslock) do not function properly, sometimes for few minutes it works but again it stops functioning. I have paid such a big amount for this laptop but it's having a problem within less than 2 years, My last Dell laptop lasted for almost 9 years. Very disappointed from dell such a bad laptop. does anyone have a solution for how to fix this issue?

I also have issues with my G5587 laptop keyboard.
The spacebar stopped working so I reassigned it to the Alt key, which wasn't too bad.
However then the "A" key and several others near it started not working too.
I've plugged in an external keyboard, which works but trying to rest the keyboard on my lap as well as the laptop is fairly ridiculous.

We all have the same issue and Dell does not solve it.
It could be damaged by the Nvidia´s sinks or cpu.
Amazing.

Did you have to send the laptop back into the Dell factory or were they able to solve it remotely? Since updating drivers through dell I have nothing but problems. I thought it might be a BIOS issue....or a Windows update issue as I cannot get Windows to update either. About to just do a clean install. Screw it. *edit* my problem is my entire KB btw. The mouse track pad works fine and it lights up..just none of the keys do anything.

I had the same problem on my keyboard, the 1 Q A Z ~ and TAB stopped working. I noticed that sometimes when I turn the laptop upside down and tapped on the bottom, the key started working and previously if I tapped hard randomly on nearby keys it would start working, but all these measures began to stop working after some time. I discovered later that my CPU was always hot and the fan was going crazy. So I took the laptop apart and changed the thermal compound.
I also removed the keyboard with the plan of taking it apart to see if I can reach the inner membrane to clean it. I started peeling the outer black membrane on the keyboard from one corner and discovered that unlike regular keyboard this one had some hard transparent plastic (I'm guessing because of the lights ) so I covered it back up. I decided to clean it instead by smacking the keyboard face down a few times to shake out any dirt that might be screwing things up. And when I put it back together lo and behold all the keys started working! (it’s been holding up for three days now.) I’ll come back to let you know if it stops working. Also my CPU temperature came down from idle of around 90c to around 60c and the fan stopped going crazy.

I have the problem with "2 w s x" keys too. It seems I found workaround for quick "reanimation" of the keys.
I found that keyboard backlight switching off/on made the keys working again.
May be it be useful for community.
I think this is hardware problem. Now I looking for new keyboard for changing one
