G5 5587 Keyboard Problems

I have been having some problems with my keyboard on my Dell G5 5587 laptop. A column of keys have stopped working: 2,w,s,x. Recently I replaced the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU (nightmare). In the process I had to unplug all the ribbon cables and then plug them back in later. I have since used canned air to clean the ribbon cable and the connector and I have re-seated the cable at least three times to to no avail. However the keys aren't completely dead. I have noticed that sometimes If I hold down one of the non-functional keys and press the key to the right of it (for example hold down s and press d) it will work. Also if I do this enough and tap the non-functional keys enough they can temporarily start working again, however they sometimes stop working again and they always seem to stop working after I restart or go into and back out of sleep mode. I have also tried reinstalling drivers twice and it doesn't do anything. A new keyboard isn't that much but replacing it is a huge pain in the *** for this laptop. Because of me working on the laptop recently and since it is a whole column, part of me thinks it is a hardware problem, but since it didn't happen for a few weeks afterwards and came on slowly and because of them working sometimes part of me thinks it is a software problem. Anyone else had this problem before? Any advise? Also how much would it cost to send it to dell to be fixed of of warranty?

I am experiencing the same thing with with irresponsive h and g keys. I bought what I believed to be a nice Dell G5 15 with a CORE i7 9th generation processor about 11 months ago. The processor and all the expensive components work fine.  This is a sham from dell known as planned obsolesce.  They want folks to buy more of their parts and junk again and again.  In my case driver updates, re-installations all a waste of time.  Dell would like to see me and you have to fool around re-install keyboards or better buy more newer dell products.  I am going to bypass dell and windows and all the jerks that claim to make a worthy dell g5 15 for about $1500 U.S. I got 11 months out of this piece of garbage. I know of folks on their 4th and 5th year with iMacs and MacBook Pros without such headaches.  Do yourself a favor and move away from these greedy bipedal (s) at dell. I purchased MacBook Pro and the difference is very noticeable.  It's like going from a broken down piece of junk with no air conditioning to a Mercedes off the showroom floor. Well worth the change. The Apple customer service will help you in a timely fashion too.

Having this issue as well. Bought Dell G5 15 5587 brand new in 2018. After two years, started seeing issues. Overheats easily, doesn't run most games smoothly, and now (like everyone else in this thread), that 2, W, S, X, and caps lock key row refuses to work. I've just about had it with this P.O.S., gonna take it to the local technology store and see if there's anything they can do to help out. If not, I'm not wasting time sending it to Dell. First and last Dell product I'll ever purchase.

Same problem: about a week or two ago suddenly 2wsx stopped working. They would stop/start working intermittently. So far I haven't found a solution, but have observed the following:

(1) When the keys are not working, pressing on 23 (rapidly one after the other) results in 32 (in reverse order). Similarly presing we results in ew and so on. Pressing 2 and then pressing and holding 3 produces 3222222222...

(2) One other poster suggested pressing 123qweasdzxc in quick succession when the 2wsx keys stop working - tried it, and seemed to reactivate the keys for me (again only temporarily).

(3) Another poster suggested the backlight button - this also reactivated the keys for me (a simpler solution).

The above observations make me think it is more of a software issue rather than hardware.

Turning off the backlit seems to work! There was a user here that said toggling the backlit worked for him and it did for me too, not sure how long it is gona last. But this was an immediate fix unlike keeping the buttons pressed or randomly tapping the adjacent buttons. That method was unpredictable and never used to work 100%.

In my case the Keys that stopped working were Num-Pad 8 delete, home, - and = Keys.

This is indeed some rubbish engineering on Dell's behalf. The laptop is complete trash for the price tag. Heats up like a dumpster fire and as the original user said, replacing the thermal paste is a nightmare. I was about to order a new keyboard and thought of going back to this thread one last time.

Having the same issue, anybody found a solution to this already? I believe I will need to change the keyboard. There's a good tutorial at youtube and a new keyboard costs around 30EUR if you lookup online.

Same error (G3-3579) no solution yet... driver reinstall etc.

It works sometimes by pressing 2 unrelated buttons (all e's in this msg typed that way).

Hi. I replaced broken keyboard - on original and new - but after short period problem with not working keys has returned. But now, there are not working different keys compared to previous ones. It looks like laptop breaking new keyboard or keyboard has factory made issue. Because of that, I'm affraid from buying another keyboard.

I have this issue, and have been using ctrl V to compensate, but it is still difficult to type quickly with the keyboard fault. I am working on getting a new keyboard, and might get one right from Dell. Hope this issue will go away from that!

@MrNobody76 No I didn't buy a new keyboard, but I have gotten used to it, and I have number lock on so I can use the number pad for 2. The keys are currently working as I type this, but it is very intermittent. I opened up the computer and cleaned the cable, but it didn't help. I do have an external keyboard that I use sometimes as well. I may get the replacement, but I just haven't had time. I did notice that my number lock key was also not working, but I just don't toggle it, so not really an issue.
