G5 Thunderbolt has issues
I've owned my Dell G5 for a few years now. After having a lot of problems with the first G5 I purchased from Dell (during pandemic to their credit), Dell support was nice enough to get me a replacement system to exact specs.
This machine has been much better in regards to issues with blue screening, charging port problems, etc... overall happy with the hardware in general and believing almost all my gripes are just around general Windows pain points.
However having also been using an Apple Macbook Air the past year I do have one problem which I think is systemic to a bigger problem you get with all PC laptop builders. To the point, the thunderbolt port on this Dell G5 is complete trash. I have a very nice, highly rated, brand name Thunderbolt doc with two 1080p displays attached to that dock. I have a very high-end Thunderbolt cable. But the connection of that cable to my G5 is never secure enough to be stable. When typing on the laptops keyboard, just that small amount of friction will upset the Thunderbolt connector, the monitors will all go black and about 3-5 seconds later I'll get display again, often with one of the monitors not coming back until I unplug and plug back in the TB cable.
Thinking about this problem, I couldn't help but consider Dell's business model. I'm speculating here, but I think common sense plays into this. Dell's competition with HP, MSI, ASUS and others make it so that to stay competitive all of these companies must source their parts from generic suppliers and often buy the cheapest thing possible. Regardless if you pay $500 or $5000 for a Windows notebook, you're still getting parts from a variety of suppliers, suppliers that often change frequently mid-life of a specific model and it's just IMPOSSIBLE to do the same kind of quality assurance on a product sourced and built in that manner to say an Apple laptop, where there's a much, much smaller set of suppliers and all parts used rigorously tested individually and in the composite product, much smaller set of device drivers to get perfect as well...
But the end result in this case I have a Dell G5 which a nearly unusable Thunderbolt port.
Could I contact Dell and pay for this to be replaced? I could pay for a new board I suppose, but you don't buy a KIA and expect a Mercedes. I hate to say it, but the truth is all Windows PC laptops. Sure you may be getting a great CPU and the latest NVidia tech, a high refresh rate screen, etc, etc... but under the hood you're getting a real mess of a product, slapped together and probably barely tested in order to get it on the market for the expected annual product refresh.
Here's what I want to Dell to know. Every time my thunderbolt port makes me loose 3-5 seconds of my life, especially when I'm in an important zoom call or writing an important e-mail. I curse the entire company, I curse Microsoft and I curse the entire supply chain, manufacturing workflow and methodology that has lead us to this kind of disgusting garbage product. Technology should NEVER steal our time.
As far as I'm concerned Michael Dell may go down in history as a great business man, but the product his company produces is subpar compared to the bar set by the one company who has shamed all of them.
Most people on Windows don't mind these interruptions, their need for Windows specific software or hardware integrations make it so they will tolerate an inferior, poor quality product. I'm done with them. My hope, my prayer is that Apple continues to innovate with the M1, M2 series and eventually gets to a price point, performance and feature set with their offerings that Windows based systems truly becomes "your grandfathers computer"
I don't blame Dell alone, there are a lot of factors going into the problems with Windows based products, .
