Your better off trying a Linux desktop install which is free to download and install if you would rather not upgrade the Windows OS from XP which like others have said does not receive any security updates and would be exposed to a lot of malware targeting that OS. Its possible that the WiFi card is so old it does not conform to the new wireless security and may only work with WEP, or WPA and not WPA2 which means simple that your router either doesn't work with older security or that more likely it is not setup to allow older security like WEP or WPA because that would limit performance with other newer devices.

Windows XP has not had any security updates in four years - it absolutely should not be used online. It's a sitting duck for cyberattack.

There are no updates for XP -- support ended in 2014.
Best future for that system is the recycling center.
