How Do I Disable The Touchpad For The Mouse Button Region?

Hi,

Is there a way to disable the touchpad in the mouse button region of the Inspiron 15 7567 gaming laptop? It's incredibly annoying that, whenever I want to use the mouse buttons to click on something, the cursor also moves. I want to be able to use the mouse buttons as only mouse buttons, and not part of the touchpad. I know this can easily be fixed in other brands of laptops, but I haven't been able to find anything like this when it comes to Dell gaming laptops. Please help!

I am trying to solve the same problem and I'm about to send my brand new XPS back if I cannot disable the touch feature associated with the button area!

Have you had any luck?

I have a new inspiron 14 5000 2 in 1 which has this issue, and no apparent control point. I have had dell tech support remote in, he doesn't quite seem to get the subject, but there are no settings that can be found that deal with this.

I will probably have to return this otherwise fine 2 in1 unless there is a quick fix for this. It basically makes using the touchpad a risk, because every touchpad button tap risks moving the cursor.

I'm with you 1000% on this issue.  Nearly every time I go to click on something I accidentally move the cursor and either click on nothing or click on the wrong thing.  This is terrible.  There has got to be a way to disable the button area of the touchpad.  Who thought this set up is a good idea??  Brand new Inspiron 15 5000 series.

I had the pleasure of multiple email exchanges with 'support' to add/remove/install drivers until eventually they said it was a hardware issue and the touchpad needed to be replaced.

Brand new Inspiron 5750.

I told them it was not hardware (the touchpad worked 'fine') but then insisted it would resolve the issue.

Engineer turned up and duly replaced the touchpad.

Still no way to stop the 'touch' over the 'buttons'.

Arranged for another 'support' person to remote over.

More time passes before he finally conceeds that it's not possible to disable the touch on the button area and it is *not* a stupid design, but it's actually a 'feature'.

That was about 4 hours wasted without a jot of care or interest in the inconvenience their stupid design and woefully untrained support staff had caused.

I had been wondering if I was the only one annoyed by this. I finally decided to take the time to research it and found this disappointing thread. Thanks for the info - even if it wasn't what I was hoping for.

Figure this out Dell - it's not a feature. It's a pain in the **bleep**...

I agree. This is a horrible design. Is there no way to add this to the software driver?

I agree. This is a terrible feature, especially in that you can't disable it at will. I hope that there's a fix for this in the future, or if nothing else, that they don't include this in new computers.

I have the same problem with my Inspiron 3593
I hope they fix it as soon as possible, besides, since it's a feature, it's supposed to be optional

I don't like a touchpad either and use a mouse exclusively and have been totally frustrated by the inability to disable the touchpad.  I finally cut a thin (1/8") piece of plywood 1-1/2" wider than the width of the touchpad and the same height (or depth) and beveled the edges.  I used two layers of double sided tape to attach to the laptop.  Works great so far and doesn't interfere with using the keyboard.  My next step is to go to the MicroCenter (where I bought this) website and dis the laptop.  Maybe if they start loosing sales they'll do something about fixing it.

Add me to the unhappy users list. I tried a piece of plastic sheet to cover the button area, but a finger is still sensed through the sheet. I'm unlikely to buy Dell again in view of this sort of stupidity.

My new G7 has the same problem. When I use my index finger to position the cursor over something like a checkbox and then attempt to use my thumb to left-click, the cursor often moves.  I once had a Logitech keyboard with a similar type of touchpad built in and I was able to disable the touch area over the buttons using a layer of aluminum foil tape and then a layer of vinyl electrical tape on top.  It didn't look or feel great but it worked.

Dell should update the driver to allow the touch surface over the button areas to be disabled!  There ARE actual button switches under the touchpad so disabling the touch surface would not disable left/right clicks.

i am so frustrated and disappointed with this XPS.  its the first dell i have had that does not have defined left and right buttons seperate from the touchpad.  how a feature like that could make it to production without an option to disable is beyond me.....
