INSPIRON 3185

I bought by wife a Inspiron 3185 and it has not been really usable since we got it.  We are having issues with 100% Disk Utilization and it is pretty much a paper weight.  She has asked me to look at it and after putting it off for months, I went to try to see if I could  figure anything out.  Well I started with a simple reboot and it has been stuck at the Getting Windows ready Don't turn off your computer.

This link may help with some suggestions from Microsoft. If you want to get rid of the bloatware and possible file corruption, then a clean install might be the way to go. That will give you as clean an operating system as possible. You can go here and download the Windows media creation tool and create a Windows 10 USB installation drive.

Hi,

Can I enquire as to whether you ever found a resolution to this issue?  I bought a 3185 for my wife essentially for the purpose of backing up her phone and web browsing.  It was so slow that it was almost unusable straight out of the box.  A series of attempts from tech support led to a complete Windows re-install but it never really fixed the issue and so it hardly got used.  Now it has run out of warranty and my wife refuses to use it because it is so painfully slow to boot and run that it might as well be a paper weight.

Thanks

it is an entry-level laptop

I appreciate it's a low spec machine so I don't expect fast performance, but I would expect any new laptop out of the box to be able to run windows and a basic web browser without hanging all the time.  Thanks anyway.

A new out of the box laptop when first connected to the internet will be downloading lots of Windows 10 updates.

More like a *run away as fast as you can* level laptop.

Your best shot at this point is probably buy a better laptop. The Dell inspiron 11 3185 even at its top configuration from Dell was very undered power in 2018. I'm written this message on may 2023. However the Dell 3185 can be upgraded with a 2.5 inch SSD and more ram. For fun, I just picked up a used 3185 on ebay. Very long story short. I installed Windows 11 home, put in a Samsung 860 QV0 2tb SSD and 32gb of crucial DDR4 3200mhz ram.

The 3185 is very fast now. However this was just for crazy fun. Probably your best best and cheaper. Just go to best buy and pickup a new laptop for less than $500.

I had the same exact problem. I finally decided to dump Windows and install Linux Mint on it. I have upgraded the RAM to 8 GB and change the HDD to an SSD. Now the thing is running blazing fast.
