Inspirion 17 5770 memory & performance
Can someone explain this memory config? Numbers don't make sense.
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB
Total Physical Memory 14.2 GB
Available Physical Memory 8.44 GB
Total Virtual Memory 16.8 GB
Available Virtual Memory 9.17 GB
Page File Space 2.64 GB
Also, Performance on this laptop has been VERY poor from the time I bought it. Often the Disk drive is at 100% and I tried everything possible to resolve this. App launches are VERY slow. Boot time is awful, etc...
Thank you for any thoughts and/or suggestions.

- HD is a Seagate 2TB 5400, 1.6 TB free
- I am very suspicious Dell is running an app in the background "somewhere" that I can't see.

Dell Support Assist is a very good program that install drivers, applications and firmware for computer. It also check the hardware within computer and does many other good stuff however, it sometimes will cause problems for the computer - see video in link below):

Anyway, 5400 RPM is a budget hard drive and is consider the slowest hard drive in this modern day times.
As Ieee488 suggested, you would get better performance with a solid state drive. According to the storage specification for the Inspiron 5770, the supported SSD are:
- M.2 SATA SSD
- M.2 NVMe SSD
The supported maximum configuration:
- M.2 SATA SSD: Up to 256 GB
- M.2 NVMe SSD: Up to 512 GB

Most people purchase their SSD from Dell com, Crucial com or Parts People com.
Please view the computer manual (Documentation) and video in link below for SSD installation. I believe you will find it to be easy to do. Thanks you for the update.

You have 16 GB of RAM.
It looks like it came with 2TB mechanical hard drive 5400 rpm.
You'd get better performance with a SSD.

What type of drive is in the computer? Hard drive or solid state drive? Some computer have both drives.
If you don't know, check in device manager. Type device manager in search box, expand Disk Drives, you should now be able to see all drives listed for the computer. Please list.

It's a good idea to update drive or drives in device manager. Just right click the drive, select Update. Hopefully this will help with 100% disk problem.
In meantime, run Dell Diagnostic tool on the computer to check hard drive and the other hardware within computer.
You could do this by following steps below:
1. Power off system
2. Power on system. quickly start tapping F12 key key until you see One Time Boot Menu in top right corner of screen. In Dell Preboot menu, select Diagnostic. Report back any error code.

I did run malware & virus scan. None found
Did run a 3rd party disk diag with no errors found. As you suggested, I will run the dell HD diagnostics to see if same results.
This laptop has been a terrible performer since new. Very frustrating. I am pretty savvy on computers and I've done every tune-up I can think of but nothing helped. Reviewed all the startup programs and didn't see any suspicious apps there. Norton, SmartByteTelemenetry and MS Edge are the main culprits for high disk activity.
I am very suspicious Dell is running an app in the background "somewhere" that I can't see. Of course contacting Dell was worthless.
So that's where I am at....Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

Let me see if I can help you with your original question.
This my configuration:
1. Total memory installed.
2. Total memory, less any set aside for graphics.
1 & 2 should not change.
3, 4, 5 & 6 will change depending on how much "Virtual Memory" is set.
There are 4 options, I use " Custom Size"
After the VM is set only 3&5 should vary depending on the number of process that are running.
The more audio, videos, games, Windows you have running/open the more VM you want.
