Inspiron 14 5401 Auto-Recovery boot loop and no BIOS access

Inspiron 5401/5408

Inspiron 5401/5408

Hi all

I got the following problem with my Inspiron 14 5401:

When powering on, a BIOS Auto-Recovery message appears in front of the Dell logo reading "BIOS corruption has been detected and Auto-Recovery is triggered" and "Power Status: OK".

After a few seconds a message reading "Updating your firmware" and "Retrieving Corrupted Firmware" and a loading bar appear under the Dell Logo. When reaching 100% an error message appears reading "BIOS Update blocked due to unsupported downgrade".

After that the laptop turns off and on again, leading to the initial BIOS Auto-Recovery message. This loop then continues indefinitely.

I already browsed through several support pages and found that a manual BIOS update using a flash drive might fix the problem. However, the strange thing is that whenever I press F2 or F12 during startup it reads "Preparing to enter BIOS Setup" respectively "Preparing to enter One-Time Boot Menu" for a couple minutes and then the loop starts again with the BIOS Auto-Recovery message. So, I cannot even recover the BIOS from a flash drive.

I also removed the battery for several minutes, but this did not help either.

I have actually no idea what to do now or what might have caused this problem (I am not aware of starting a BIOS update or something). Since today the laptop just worked fine.

I would be really grateful for any thoughts on this.

Update on this:

After removing the battery for a longer time I occassionally manage to access the One-Time Boot Menu.

Unfortunately, the "Flash from File" option does not help either. After selecting the BIOS file on the bootable flash drive, the laptop obviously tries to restart. The keyboard lights up, but the screen stays black and nothing further happens (I waited for about an hour).

Would be really grateful for any help. I am slowly running out options...

Many thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately it has become worse in the meantime. Now I cannot even power on the laptop anymore. When I press the power button the keyboard starts blinking every few seconds, but the display remains black. I also cannot turn it off anymore. It will not stop blinking, until I remove the battery.

So unfortunately I cannot recover or reset the BIOS, as the laptop does not even reach POST.

Hello Magicman,

I have same problem after trying to reset the bios by removing coin cell and main battery. Any solution other than changing the motherboard for blinking white when plugged in and no bios or post at all. Btw , lcd test by pressing  "D" works...
