Inspiron 15-5570, upgrading to SSD

I just bought an Inspiron 15 5570 with the intention of making it a pretty fast computer by putting an SSD drive in it.  It came with a 1GB 5400 drive so my question is, am I better off just getting rid of that and replacing it with a 2.5" SSD, or should I leave that drive in for extra storage and add M2 drive?  Will I be losing any speed or anything if I just leave the old drive in there and use the SSD to boot, install programs, etc?  I am thinking of a 500GB because I want to keep this under $100.  I have a similar setup on my desktop with a 250 GB drive for Windows and programs and a 1TB mechanical drive to store all my large files.

Thank you for your message. An SSD is always a better option than a mechanical drive both in terms of speed & reliability.

You can set up an SSD to boot from & use the other drive for storage.

This system supports

M.2 PCIe 3x4 NVMe SSD—Up to 512 GB

M.2 SATA SSD—Up to 256 GB

Thanks for the reply.  So something like this would work, right?  Even though it says it is not compatible on the Crucial site, maybe some 5570's have different configurations, but this drive is M.2 PCIe 3x4 NVMe,  I am still catching up on this technology, but this would be faster than a SATA M2, right?

I just got rid of that 5400rpm drive with crackling sound from my Dell 5570 and installed an SSD and I'm quite happy with long lasting battery and a silent system.

There are multiple threads confirming that NVMe SSDs work in the Inspiron 5570, although a system firmware configuration that can not be changed by users limits performance to about 1.8 GB/s. That is still much faster than SATA, though. Here’s a thread that provides more info: https://www.dell.com/community/Inspiron/Can-Inspiron-5570-boot-from-NVMe-M-2-SSD/td-p/6110356

So yes, that Crucial NVMe SSD should work just fine, although I’ve read reports that some Crucial SSDs cause BSoDs unless link state power management is disabled, but I don’t remember which models that occurs on. I mostly use Samsung SSDs, and they seem to be more popular with others here too.

I was looking at the Samsung as mentioned in other posts but it is $150 where the Crucial is $80.  While I realize the Samsung is a lot faster, due to the 1.8 GB/s limitation, I won't be able to take advantage of that speed anyways, right?  With the read speed at 1900 MB/s and 950 MB/s write speed of the Crucial, would that be as fast as I can go anyways?

Well, technically you could go a lot faster on writes with a faster SSD if the Crucial is rated for 950 MB/s, but most people's workloads are not write-intensive.  So yes, your reasoning makes sense given the cost difference.  I was just letting you know about a potential issue you might encounter with the Crucial SSD and the way to resolve it. :)

Yes, I did see that issue you mentioned and I appreciate it! It sounds like I should be all set with that info and other posts here regarding the installation. I dont care about copying an image over because it's new anyways and nothing is yet on it. I did copy the restore files to a USB drive but I will actually probably just install a fresh install of Windows because I don't need anything that came Pre-installed. I would imagine that would work but if not, I'll still have the recovery files. Thanks for your help.

One more thing before I do this upgrade...

I read the other posts and was a little confused about the RAID/AHCI.  So as long as I am providing a clean install of Win 10, I will want to first physically install the drive, then go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive and enable AHCI, then once everything is installed, re-enable the SATA drive?

Hello SreejithR,

I also would like to upgrade my Inspiron 15 5570 with an SSD and I wonder if this one would be compatible.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I bought Dell Inspiron 5570 laptop in 2018. I want to know whether I can replace a @2TB SSD instead of 2TB Hard Drive ? @SreejithR

Yes, you can replace the hard drive with a 2T 2.5" SATA SSD.

I bought a 1tb m2 pci before I saw that 512 was the max. The drive cloned ok but I cannot get it to boot from the ssd. Could this be because it’s past the 512 or something else?
