Inspiron 16 Plus 7610

Recently purchased this model and had a couple of questions: 1.  The second M.2 slot accepts a PCIe Gen 3 SSD in size 2230.  For some reason that size is not readily available, however Western Digital has SN530 1TB in 2230 and a few sellers on a well-known auction site has them.  The slot one has a Western Digital SN730 1TB for the OS drive.  Is the SN530 a viable option?  2.   The tech specs for the 7610 notes RAM is limited to 32GB.  The Crucial configurator says this model will support 64GB, noting tech specs are often current at time of printing/publishing.  Can the 7610 operate with 64GB with no errors or performance hit?

TIA

Sepp D.

Answering my own inquiry, it all works.  This laptop does indeed support 64GB RAM.  The 2230 SSD initialized, formatted, and functions.

Which 2230 did you purchase? I'm having trouble finding them and they are extremely expensive.

Yes they are elusive for some reason, not sure its supply chain related or the 2230 is going the way of the DoDo.  I did buy the Western Digital SN530 1 TB off the 'Bay.  The seller has 2 posted now, but what he's asking might be a deal breaker.  IDK, seems reasonably priced if they are new.  Dell has them but are perpetually out of stock and IIRC are more than what this guy is asking.

I see the 2230 WD SN530 are back in stock on the 'Egg.  They are the made in and shipped from PRC, but price is pretty good for 1 TB 2230.  I bought the Crucial RAM from 'Egg and it was made in/shipped from the PRC.  Took about 10 days to delivery.

A little late to the game.

Which memory modules did you use to get 64gb total?

Replaced both Dell (Crucial) SODIMMs with Crucial 32GB Single DDR4 3200 MT/s CL22 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT32G4SFD832A

Hello,

A friend of mine just purchased this laptop along with a 32gb Kingston Impact Fury DDR4 SO-DIMM 3200. When we install it the laptop doesn't boot up.

I have two questions please:

1. Do you know if this ram module is compatible with this laptop and if so how can we enable it?

2. May I kindly ask if you could write the exact specs your 32GB Crucial ram module that you mentioned working for me to check please?

Many thanks,

Crucial specs below.  Not sure if Kingston will work.  I researched this fairly thoroughly and my conclusion was use Dell or Crucial RAM (and many here who way more tech savvy than I say the same).  Not clear to me if Dell manufactures RAM any longer or ever, but when I opened the laptop I saw the modules were Crucial, but Dell branded.  Dell did not have in stock, so went with Crucial.

Technology - DDR4; Speed DDR4-3200; PC speed - PC4-25600; Density - 64GB Kit (32GBx2); Module type - SODIMM; DIMM type - Unbuffered; CAS latency - 22; Extended timings - 22-22-22; Voltage - 1.2V

Additionally, you didn't note the RAM configuration the laptop came with.  Mixing RAM modules of different specs and manufacturer will definitely cause laptop not to boot.  They need to be of same spec and manufacturer for the RAM to work, or so I have found after reading through all the comments here about Dell RAM upgrade problems seem to support that conclusion, i.e. stick with Dell or Crucial RAM.

One quick question: what was the boot up process like? Did it boot up immediately after installation of the 64GB ram, or did it stagnate for a small amount of time? Also, does it consume more power and have faster or slower boot up time after installation?

I couldn't say as I don't have the test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment to find out.  It takes about 8 sec (+/-) to boot up to the logon screen, which I have the bio-metric finger scanner enabled.  This is DDR4 SDRAM so it has faster clock speed and uses less power than compared to DDR3 (1.2v vs 1.5v).  Performance is probably imperceptible without the measurement tools to observe the actual numbers.  I see Dell has the latest Inspiron 16 Plus available with 12th GEN processor and DDR5 SDRAM.  I run a lot of productivity applications simultaneously, thus the desire to go max RAM I could use without breaking the laptop functionality.

Can you post your BIOS version and BIOS settings?  I am getting a halt at boot and BIOS records a Memory Error alert but no other details.

RAM: Crucial P/N: CT32G4SFD832A 16 FB2

Did you try safe mode boot and check the device manager for any issues with RAM?

Reinstall the factory RAM and see if boots.  Maybe the Crucial isn't seated properly.

BIOS is current release v1.11.0.  Settings are default from factory.

Hi Sepp I bought the same laptop in the past year, now I want to upgrade the M.2 to an WD_BLACK 2TB SN850X but I read in the Manual I will need a cooper thermal shield for the M.2 2280, I want to know if you have any expirience with this upgrade, and I want to upgrade the RAM I been look for the Kingston Fury Kingston FURY Impact 64GB (2x32GB) 3200 Model: CT2K32G4SFD832A but I read the manual and that say the 16 Plus 7610 Inspiron laptop only support a maximum of 32GB, so I been search more information about this and I read your experience with the Crucial Memory so I been look for the Crucial RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR4 3200MHz Model: CT2K32G4SFD832A, can you give us a feedback about your experience, Had you any issue with the configuration?, thanks.
