Inspiron 3793 Memory Upgrade: 2 slots usable?

Question

Just ordered an Inspiron 17 3000 3793. Got a good price but I'd like to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB. Per my order specs and the online User's Guide, there are two SODIMM slots, one of which is occupied by a 1x8GB DDR4 2666 MHz stick. The Guide lists the following supported configurations: • 4 GB DDR4 at 2666 MHz (1 x 4 GB)• 8 GB DDR4 at 2666 MHz (2 x 4 GB)• 8 GB DDR4 at 2666 MHz (1 x 8 GB)• 12 GB DDR4 at 2666 MHz (1 x 4 GB + 1 x 8 GB)• 16 GB DDR4 at 2666 MHz (1 x 16 GB)  Conspicuously missing is any reference to 2 x 8 GB even though both slots are usable in certain configurations. So apparently I can't just add another 8GB stick. I have to remove the existing one and replace it with a single 16GB stick. A chat with sales support this morning first said memory wasn't upgradeable and then said it was, but only as above.  Has anyone added another 8GB stick to get 16GB total? Is this just a case of the Guide not catching up with later models being sold? The difference in price isn't huge ($70 vs. $35) but I'd rather not spend the money unless I have to. TIA.

2X8 will work just fine - if you want it to be dual channel, match the existing module as closely as possible.

Thank you U2CAMEB4ME. As you proposed I will buy Crucial, but 16GB and try 16GB as single modul or 16+8GB in single channel. I hope that dual channel is not so important...

As U2CAMEB4ME proposed, I read Crucial list of potential Memory upgrades, bought one 16GB module, upgraded to 16GB + 8GB and the system is working like a charm with 24GB of RAM.

Hi all, although officially it says up to 16gb of ram, I can confirm that it is working with 24, one 16 and one 8, if needed I intend to buy another 16gb and upgrade it
