Inspiron 3793 overheating

I bought a dell inspiron 3793 a while ago, and I've noticed it always ran hot, but recently I looked at just how hot, and when idle the cpu barely goes below 60 degrees C, when doing a little bit of work it can stay at around 70 - 80, and when working hard it goes right up to 100 degrees, and takes ages to come back down. Frankly I'm worried this will cause damage to the hardware, not to mention being very uncomfortable on my lap at the best of times. Is this an issue with this computer or is this typical behaviour of the inspiron 3793?

First, what model?  There is no 1793 (is this a 3793?)

The temperatures you see are pretty much normal for most newer notebooks.  Intel allows the temps to go up to 100 C under heavy operation, but the other temps are within what you'll see for most new systems.

That said, notebooks should never be used on your lap or any fabric surface - they should be on a hard, flat heat-resistant surface while in use.  Operating them on clothing not only blocks the cooling, but will also lead to clogging of the heatsink-fan from fiber intake over time, causing even more overheating.

Ah, yes sorry, misread the number, it is the 3793, I'll edit my post.

Right, that's a little disappointing really, hoped I'd be able to use it on my lap but oh well.

Thanks for the reply.

Why can't we use on lap or fabric surface.(Can't we use at airport, at airport how to find the hard surface) If you use on hard flat surface then it should be Desktop PC not Laptop. .

This year is 2020 not 2000. .

It's at like 60 when my cpu usage is below 10%, background apps aren't the issue

I have Inspiron 3793 with i7 processor. I have the same temperatures as you described.
I didn't notice any change in productivity with high temperatures. What was also interesting is that my laptop never shut itself down when reaching 100C. Also, it doesn't feel hot to touch when reaching such high temperatures.

I decided to contact Dell Support and ask them if such high temperatures are normal and I was told that processor shouldn't be that hot. They performed remote diagnostics to check temperatures themselves and decided that cooling system should be replaced. They sent a technician next day to replace a cooling system, since my warranty covers it.
After replacing it nothing changed!
Turns out there's nothing wrong with a cooling system nor temperature readings are correct.
Technician also noticed that the laptop doesn't feel hot enough for 80-100C.
He couldn't tell me why temperatures shown were wrong but it could be Bios or a sensor.

So, if you don't see any changes in productivity and your laptop is warm but not hot while showing a temperature of 80-100C then there's nothing to worry about. But if your laptop is hot then you should contact Dell Support.

Try not to place your laptop on a desk or any other hard surface instead of your lap. I think any laptop would feel uncomfortably hot if you put it on your lap. Then try to feel if it's actually that hot or is it just warm.

When my laptop is at 80 - 100 degrees, it does feel it. My laptop hasn't shut itself down when reaching 100 either though, but the temperatures have never overshot 100. Maybe the not shutting down thing is because I've installed Linux though?

I don't typically use my laptop on my lap anyway.

I will contact Dell Support though, thanks for the advice.
