My new 5485 with AMD R3700 CPU bought 2 weeks ago also shares the same symptom.
It occasionally goes haywire and the mouse cursor freezes. In some occasions it can resumed after idling for 20 secs but sometimes it would not resume.
At first, I need to reboot the 5485 through keyboard control. Then I have learnt the behaviour and found a temporary resolution for the case when it freezes permanently.
The quick fix for the touchpad problem is to access the Touchpad Control menu, toggle the Disable/Enable switch for the Touchpad. The touchpad will resume again without reboot the entire 5485.
I hope Dell can reveal the incident reports and provide a permanent fix to rectify the annoying issue asap.
Thought it might be useful to provide an update on this. It is simple, the issue remains despite considerable assistance from this forum and a visit from a Dell engineer who replaced the trackpad.
I have all but given up in attempting to understand why this should be happening and I think Dell may have too. It certainly would be great to have a solution but I am not optimistic as all attempts thus far have failed. I am certain that it is not a simple trackpad component failure as that would have been sorted with the replacement.
I remain curious about how many other users have experienced this and whether they might have stumbled on a solution.
I cannot fault Dell in terms of their willingness to help and for taking the trouble to arrange the replacement component but clearly a working solution would be most welcome.
I have exactly the same issue. Just bought mz 5485 2 weeks ago. I returned the laptop to the store last week, who were skeptical, but gave me a new one anyway. The new one has exactly the same issue.
I have run all the updates, both windows and dell, and the issues is still present. Mouse freezes about once every 15-20 mins for about 20 seconds. Have to move it about randomly for a few seconds before it returns, by which time i have accidentally clicked and dragged stuff all over the place.
As this is the second laptop to exhibit this issue i think i will be returning it and opting for a different brand this time.
That is unless anyone here has actually found the solution....
The issue remains for me. Exact same pattern as you describe. Like you I updated everything but no joy. This just spoils a really good laptop but if I now had the choice I would have returned for an alternative. I don't think Dell have a solution. It remains puzzling that this seemingly only affects a very few users though?
I have the same problem with the AMD Inspiron 5585 I bought for my wife's birthday. It freezes every few hours (track pad and buttons unresponsive). I was passed my 30 days so Dell won't take a return for it. Updates don't help. I want to try plugging in a mouse to see if it will still move with a mouse and not the trackball when it happens. Has anyone tried this?
Yes I have tried plugging in a mouse when my 5585 touchpad freezes. A plugged in mouse works just fine. It is just the touchpad. I have found that when it freezes permanently you can type in touchpad to the Windows 10 search bar, bring up the touchpad settings, use the space bar to disable and reenable the touchpad. Once you do that it will restore the touchpad. It still will freeze intermittently, though.
I have tried everything I can think of, and can't find a solution.
Turn off some of the gesture features. I had this problem today, and i do not usually use the trackpad. Turned off quite a few of the features such as 3 and 4 finger. Seems to all be fixed.
My System , Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming (Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz, 2801 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)), does the same thing (external mouse freezes for any movement or scroll) for few seconds, more like 5-10 seconds and when it unfreezes, it appears to have processed at least some of the movements (as the cursor 'reappears' in a difference place)
I just bought an Inspiron 13 5310 with the very same trouble, despite I read some comments about this issue I thought it was some randome truoble. I realize now is not. Incredible how Dell does nothing about this issue with various models of inspiron. I use a BT mouse and works perfect no freezing and very fluid. so I think it is the hardware.

Hi,
I am having the same problem with my brand-new Inspiron 7506 2-n-1. So, I searched for solutions and came upon this thread.
My problem was solved by clicking on "Reset your touchpad" at the bottom of the Touchpad settings page.
I normally use a Bluetooth mouse, so this problem wasn't obvious to me until recently.

My issue was the bluetooth mouse was freezing intermittently every few seconds even when in use.
My solution was as follows:
Download and install the latest Intel® Wireless Bluetooth® for Windows® 10 and Windows 11:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18649/intel-wireless-bluetooth-for-windows-10-and-windows-11.html?
This immediately fixed the issue for me!
