Hi msgmz:

What is your Windows OS, current Inspiron 5459/5559/5759 BIOS version, does your touchpad uses Dell-brand drivers, generic Microsoft "Precision" drivers or some other brand-name drivers (e.g., Synaptics, etc.), and what is your current touchpad driver version? I live in Canada, and I can't see anything relevant listed under Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices on the Inspiron 5559 support page <here> on their Canadian site except a Dell Unifying Application released on 25-Apr-2013. Dell employee DELL-Terry B's 29-Jun-2016 post in Touchpad Function Missing on Dell Inspiron 15 5559 suggested the OP Invossmer uninstall the Synaptics driver from the Control Panel and then install the Dell Touchpad Driver v19.0.15.2 (rel. 08-Oct-2015) from <here>, but I can't see any evidence of either a Synaptics or Dell Touchpad Driver listed on the Inspiron 5559 support page.

I have a similar problem with intermittent system freezes on my Inspiron 15 5584 / Win 10 Pro v1909 laptop (touchpad only, no touchscreen) and when this happens the only way I can use my laptop again is to perform a hard shutdown by holding down the power button for 10 or 15 sec and re-booting. I'm not sure if there's a specific region of my screen that's triggering the freeze, but I have noticed that it usually happens when I swipe my finger at the top right of the touchpad to scroll down a document or web page. That's similar to the area you highlighted in your image, but that could just be a coincidence since I've also had a few freezes where I was simply typing text in Notepad or some other program.

I've posted some information about the out-of-date Microsoft drivers my touchpad currently uses in my Feb 2020 thread Inspiron 5584 - Wrong Touchpad Driver? but I don't think most of the comments about my HID-compliant Touch Pad and Intel HID Event Filter Driver are relevant to your Inspiron 5559. I opened a support ticket with Dell-CARES about various problems I'm having with my touchpad but they weren't even able to tell me what device driver I should be using for the touchpad on my Inspiron 5584.

If you haven't already done so, please try performing a systems diagnostics by either pressing F12 at startup or by running Dell Support Assist.

Here is some information from the Forum you may find helpful:

Hi msgmz:

Were you able to run the built-in diagnostic tool as AdrianG001 suggested by restarting your computer and pressing the F12 key when the Dell logo appears as described in the support article Dell Diagnostic Tools to Diagnose and Fix Hardware Problems on Your Dell PC, Tablet or Servers (see the section titled Diagnostic Tools for Dell PCs and Tablets and select the Built-in or Offline Diagnostics tab), and if so did it report any errors?  I don't understand how you launched the Dell SupportAssist tool installed on your hard drive if your laptop has no way of receiving commands after your system has finished booting up.

Can you boot up in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking (see the BleepingComputer tutorial How to Start Windows in Safe Mode) to see if your touchpad works with minimal Windows system files and basic drivers loaded? Have you tried using a USB-connected mouse as your input device?

We still don't know what Windows OS you have, since the support page <here> for the Inspiron 5559 shows this model can ship with Ubuntu or 64-bit Win 7, Win 8.1 or Win 10. If Win 10 please let us know the current Version (e.g., 1903, 1909, 2004); if you can manage to boot into Safe Mode you can also find the current Win 10 build number as instructed in the TechSmith article How to Check Windows 10 Build).

Hi msgmz:

I've also found a few threads where a swollen battery was causing odd glitches with an Inspiron touchpad - see USNVET90's 03-Jun-2020 post in Inspiron 5559 Touchpad Buttons Not Working for one example.  If you power off your laptop and disconnect the power cable, remove your battery from the laptop case and then power up while your laptop is plugged in does your touchpad work correctly?
