Inspiron 7520 is dead...

Hi - new here & fairly stupid, so bear with me please...

My Inspiron 7520 (3rd Gen I7, 1TB) wouldn't boot, F2/F12 options didn't fix it & diagnostics show a hard drive 0 error code 2000-01 42.  I understand from the forum that this means the drive is dead & needs to be replaced, & I'm reasonably confident I could do that (it's working with objects).  My questions are -

1 Can/should I change to an SSD & if so, can you tell me the precise type & size I'd need?

2 When installed, how do I get Windows 10 onto it?  I know, I know, but I can't work it out.

I hope I've given enough info, but if I can am happy to answer any Qs.

I thank you for taking the time to look at my problem & hope someone can help me.

You can use any size SSD you'd like.  The  sweet spot in price/capacity is now at the 1T mark -- that is, you get the lowest cost per gigabyte at that point.  Smaller or larger drives generally cost more per gigabyte.

Yes, you can prepare the Windows install media using another system.

An SSD will greatly boost performance.  Just bear in mind they're appreciably slimmer than hard drives and you may need a spacer to install one to ensure a reliable connection to the system board.

Windows 10 can be reinstalled by creating a bootable flash drive using Windows Media Creation tool:

(if it's already activated on the system, it'll re-activate on login to Microsoft's servers).

Hi Indium - thank you for the speedy reply

Ok, I didn't know about the spacer, so that's good.  Would you recommend a "same size" SSD, ie 1TB or can I go smaller?  I really don't know how much space I was using & of course can't find out now with an unbootable machine.

Can I create the flash drive on my desktop & then use it on the laptop?

I'm sorry if these are daft Qs, but this is new territory for me.
