Lines & distorted Monitor

Question

I have been using this laptop for about 10 years. Since couple of days I have noticed that lines randomly appear on the monitor and some time the graphics are distorted a bit. I am using surge protected power source. The local DELL technician says it may be a problem with the monitor or the connecting cable but he is not sure. I have run support assisit several times and it returns that there is no problem. Please help me over come this problem.

Do you have an external monitor you can test the system with? I would start there, and see if the lines follow the external monitor.

Run a screen diagnostic - hold the D key through powerup.  Are the test screens that show up faulty as well, or do they show a clear image?
