Need Basic info such as model, RAM, hard drive size using svc tag or svc code

I purchased a Dell I7 3780 laptop online from Staples. The front panel tag on the laptop I received says 3700, not 3780.  Can I use the service tag or express service code to get the actual model number, etc. from Dell Support?  The laptop is a Christmas present, so I just opened the package briefly to get the service tag and express service code and verify it was not DOA.  When started, Cortana starts asking questions, so I turned the computer off. The label on the front panel is pretty blah, not up to a $500+ computer, so I hope it is a series number, not the actual model.

The I7 3780 seems to be no longer in production, and I got a nice discount.  I assumed Staples had misplaced it in their warehouse.  I still get a Dell warranty.

The Dell Inspiron 3700 model was released 20 years ago (1999) and certainly did not have an i7 CPU. And yes 3700 is a series so that is what the label signifies. I have an Inspiron 5575 but the label on it said 5000 as that was the series. And to answer your question, yes you can go to the support page and type in the service tag number and find the full system configuration.

' I still get a Dell warranty ".

----------------------------

You should register the computer in the link below to make sure there's warranty on the computer. Dell computers usually come with a 1 year warranty on the hardware. You could request a quote for an extended warranty on the hardware and a quote for software warranty.

@JOcean  Dell is rolling over their model numbers now.  For example, the Latitude series got to the xx90 level (e.g. Latitude 7490) and was replaced by the Latitude 7400.  The XPS 15 is currently at 7590 level and the rumor is the next one will be called the 7500.  So this might result in some model numbers being recycled.

@Jim_Hill  if you go support.dell.com and enter your Service Tag, it will show you the model of that system.  And if you click the "System Configuration" section, you will be able to access the system configuration as shipped.  On a side note for future reference, when talking about a laptop model, always mention the product line name, not just the model number, because some model numbers are used in multiple lines.  For example, there might be an Inspiron 7400 and a Latitude 7400, so if you just say "Dell 7400", that doesn't necessarily identify the model.  I notice you posted this in the Inspiron section, but sometimes people even choose the wrong section of the forum for their question, so that isn't totally reliable either.

Thanks for that information. It does explain some of the confusion about model numbers.
