Not booting, charger issue?

A while ago my rabbit chewed my inspiron 15 charger cord. I taped it up and it worked, though as time wore on it got finicky and I'd have to bend the cord a particular way to get it to charge.

A few days ago it was plugged in at my new desk but not charging, but I didn't care because it was still at 50%. Then it must have done a lengthy update. When I came back, it was at 9%, still not charging. It gave me the usual "ac power adaptor not recognized" warning (like it always did when the charger was being troublesome), and booted up. It was being slow, though, and I couldn't get the charger to work, and I decided to restart.

That's when something went wrong. It hasn't booted up, and will only go to the ac adaptor warning, then to the Dell logo, then back to the warning, over and over. I'm thinking (hoping) I just need a new charger? Has anyone experienced this? I'm hoping nothing more serious is wrong. I cannot get it to start in safe mode, or with the charger unplugged.

Thanks!

" A while ago my rabbit chewed my inspiron 15 charger cord. I taped it up and it worked "

Please list Dell model number and version of windows. Example: Dell Inspiron 3543, windows 10

If you don't know Dell model number, enter the service tag number ( or select Detect Product) onto the link below.

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04

After, you should see the computer model number in your Dell Product Support page.

In the meantime, I would guess the rabbit damage the AC adapter and most likely needs to be replace with a new one. Now, you could check in the BIOS to see if the adapter is detected. If adapter isn't detected, the system will continue to received power but will not charge. Please follow the steps below to get into BIOS setup:

1. Power off system.

2. Power on system, quickly start tapping the F2 key continuously until you see the BIOS setup.

In the BIOS menu, look for the option that says AC adapter type under the main tab. If the adapter type says Unknown or None then the adapter needs to be replace with a new one.

Note: Please wiggle the adapter's end that connected to the system ( or DC jack) while checking adapter type in BIOS.

Thank you for the answer! I was pretty convinced it was the charger since nothing else appeared wrong before this happened, and so I bought a new one.

I think the new charger is charging (I guess I can follow your steps to know for sure) and the light is no longer yellow, which it was when the battery is super low. But it's still not booting, it cycles through the dell symbol to a brief systems check, back to the Dell symbol. I am able to hit f8 then f12 but it gives me a lot of BIOS options that I don't know the meaning of.

It seems like there is a bigger issue, but the computer was running fine (as far as I could tell) before the battery drained!

It is an inspiron 15, 5000 series, I think Windows 10.

Thank you for any help or suggestions of what to try!

Please run Dell off line diagnostic to check the system hardware by following steps below:

1. Power off system.

2. Power on system. quickly start tapping F12 key continuously until you see Preparing One Time Boot Menu in the top right corner of the screen.

In Dell eSPA Preboot menu, select Diagnostic. After quick tests, select Hard drive and then click Thorough Test Mode. Report back any error code

Alright I ran the diagnostic test (sorry I'm so late responding), it detected a problem with the hard drive. Error: 2000-0151. Validation: 114566.

Thanks for any help/advice.

Error code 2000-0151 usually means hard drive is failing or has failed, and needs to be replace with a new one. You can reseat the hard drive to see if that will make any difference.

It's happened to me too , the warning however said that you can disable the battery warning in the BiOS , so I pressed F2 , went into the BiOS and disabled battery warning under alarm list.booted up and it worked , however the battery doesn't seem to be charging , I guess I have to work with the AC cord plugged in, I'm not in the mood the purchase a new charger just yet
