I have an XPS 9560 and the NVMe (Toshiba KXG50ZNV256G) write performance are lower than a common SSD (my second hard drive is a Samsung 840 EVO).

Hi,

I've installed a Samsung 970 EVO 500 GB drive in my Dell Precision 3420 SFF's M.2 slot.  The BIOS sees it.  I've run Samsung's data transfer tool, which appeared to work.  (The data transfer tool referred to both drives as "C", but that matched images in the documentation.) I then went into the BIOS and changed the ordering of UEFI boot so that the system would boot from the M.2.  After rebooting, Windows' "Device Manager" shows the Samsung SSD 970 EVO 500GB first in the list under "Disk drives," followed by "Toshiba DT01ACA050."

Viewing "Properties" of the Samsung from Device Manager tells me it is Bus #3, Target Id 0, LUN 0.  The original Toshiba drive (still in the system) gives Bus #0, Target Id 0, LUN 0.

In "Drive Tools" (This PC), I'm shown only one drive.  Confusingly, at least to me, when I look for the properties from this window, I am shown three drives, first the DVD, then the Samsung, then the Toshiba.

I am not familiar with Windows and have tried to determine if I'm running off the Samsung.  I have no idea how to do this.

Also, although Samsung's site offers a "Samsung_NVM_Express_Driver_3.0.exe" driver installer, when I download and run it, it tells me "Samsung NVM Express Device is not connected."

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

For anyone else who encounters this problem, I made two changes.  I am not sure whether both were necessary.

The SSD was shown as "offline" due to a signature collision with the drive from which Samsung's cloning software cloned it.

First, I went into Windows 10's diskpart and changed the disk signature of the Toshiba.  I followed the instructions here: https://www.howtohaven.com/system/change-disk-signature.shtml  When specifying a new id, don't include the curly braces.  Choosing the existing GUID with the first digit incremented worked fine for me.

When I restarted, Windows wanted to go into automatic repair.  So I "ESC"aped to the BIOS boot settings and unselected Windows Boot Manager, leaving only the Samsung's boot manager.  I then rebooted and the system went into Windows from the SSD.  I don't understand enough about the boot process to say what exactly happened, but if the Windows Boot Manager is on the drive, I assumed it used the cloned Windows Boot Manager from off the SSD.

After these two changes, and based on the noticeable speed change, I'm confident the system is running off the SSD.  It shows the SSD as OS (C:) and the original Toshiba as OS (E:).

I hope this helps someone else who is left hanging by Samsung's totally useless documentation, and Samsung's software which left my computer NOT using its product.

I haven't gotten quite as far as you guys. I have a brand new 5570 purchased 12/31. And I just bought a Samsung 970 EVO from Amazon this week. So everything is current.

I installed the SSD, rebooted, Viewed the drive in Disk Manager and the computer promptly crashed with BSOD. Reboots with the memory test screen, reboots back to Windows, then repeats the crash. Over and over.

When I removed the SSD everything went back to normal. So I haven't even gotten so far as booting from the SSD. Just installing it seems to create a problem. What am I missing?

I also got the same problem. Here is how I get it solved. 1. Before clean install go to BIOS setup and go to drives and uncheck your 0 drive. Disk 0 is your hard drive normally. Keep legacy boot ON. 2. Now, when you insert USB it will install Windows on your NVME drive. 3. Now, when rebooted, do not change any option till Windows logged on. 4.. Getting everything ready, now restart your PC, and go to BIOS and check Disk 0 option and restart. 5. After Windows logged ON, you will get your both disks working. Cheers.

No SATA driver whether SSD or Hard drive all go through the SATA Controller NVME goes directly to PCI-E To Run an NVME SSD your BIOS and Motherboard  has to Support it

Thanks. I *think* I got it. Everything is running fine. Boots great. Really it was brute force. I removed the hard drive. Loaded a clean install on the SSD. For got to switch from RAID to AHCI. Had to start all over. Added back my hard drive after I got the SSD booting fine. BUT, I forgot about the drive numbers. The SSD is Drive 1 and the HDD is Drive 0. Since everything is booting fine and and running fine I am hoping I can just leave it like that.

Dear @ejn63 good afternoon

Can I request You please to clarify, what does mean your phrase "which you'll find in an upmarket system"? I mean, is there some list of these systems, splitted to "regular" & "upmarket" or something similar?

I'm just asking because I am using DELL Latitude 5591 with factory installed NVMe SATA3 SSD Toshiba KSG60ZMV256G - and I am considering a chance to replace this Toshiba with Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 1TB (https://www.amazon.in/Samsung-Internal-Solid-State-MZ-V7S1T0BW/dp/B07MBQPQ62)

Will I be able to boot up my system from this SSD? And how may I know if my Latitude 5591 belongs to "regular" or "upmarket" kind of system? Will I get 3 GB/s or 1,8 GB/s only? Can be some other problems or moments? Please advise.

Thank You in advance!

Did you post in the wrong forum? this is the Inspiron  Forum?

Reguardless you'll find the answer in your service manual

To get this information you need to log on to  Dell Support, enter your model number, and most importantly Enter your Service Tag Number.

That will open all the hardware information on your Particular notebook, You should download and read your Service Manual there you will find out how to open your notebook

There will be a section on upgrading your m.2 SSD some Dell computer will work with either SATA or NVME some only one or the other you'll have to look yours up.
