8+4 will work and give you 12 -- that said, anything but a matched pair won't produce the best performance as it'll lock the system in single channel mode. Dual channel mode will give the best performance -- for that you need paired memory.
thank you! to make sure I am understanding the entire issue, if the 4 and the 8 are not compatible together, would I be able to run the computer with just one stick of 8gb?

Yes, a single 8G module will also work (in single-channel mode).
