Stuck on restart

Hi,

I had a recent update to my laptop Inspiron 15 7559 and I turned it back on with no problems. Then it was freezing and so I tried restarting. Now it is stuck on the restart page. It has been about 4 hours and nothing will change. I tried holding down the power button multiple times. For 10 secs, 30 secs even longer. Nothing changes. I tried ctrl alt delete, nothing happened. I am not sure what to do, I have alot of data I do not want to lose.

To retrieve data from your hard drive, you would remove it from the laptop and connect the hard drive to another PC using a SATA to USB adapter.

You're going to have to disconnect the AC adapter. That will force a shutdown. Usually doing a hard reset by holding down the power button for 10 seconds or so should force a shutdown.

Useful steps (always good to check first):

  • Disconnect peripherals and cold restart.
  • Turn off computer, disconnect power cord and restart after a few minutes.

Solution without using a recovery disk:

  1. Restart computer and press F8 several times to enter Safe Boot Menu. If F8 key has no effect, force-restart your computer 5 times.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
  3. Select a good known restore point and click Restore.

Solution using a recovery disk:

  1. Plug an empty USB flash drive (> 4 GB) into a healthy computer.
  2. Prepare a recovery disk using Microsoft Media Creation Tool [1].
  3. Plug the USB drive into the frozen computer.
  4. You may have to tell the BIOS to boot from USB disk.
  5. Restart computer. Windows Setup will show up from USB drive.
  6. Select your language, keyboard layout and click Next.
  7. Click "Repair Windows" (but not "Install Windows").
  8. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.
  9. Select a good known restore point and click Restore.
