SupportAssist backup for factory reset

Question

Inspiron 15 5570 purchased Dec 2018.

PC was suddenly running very slow. Disk Usage in task manager was at 100%. Restarted several times with no change or improvement. Checked for update & attempted to install hoping that might resolve disk usage issue. Installation failed and pc basically crashed. Blackscreen diagnosing....attempt failed. Restart, blackscreen etc.

Eventually gave up & attempted to reset through OS diagnostic. I'm completing backup to external hard drive with plenty of space, as instructed to do before reset, and it's been stuck for about 6hrs. I'm not sure what to do.

what do I do about the backup? unplug external hd? power off from this screen?

I should have said i did that already and it just takes me to screen saying restart might help(it doesn't). Troubleshooting didn't ID problem. That's why I resigned myself to reset.

Run an extended hard drive diagnostic (F12 at powerup).  A failing/failed drive is a very strong possibility.
