Welcome to the Dell Community @Rob_UK

To better assist you, the members would need the exact model number of your laptop/desktop???

Identify your Dell:

@Rob_UK

Yes that is legit!!!

They want your information to check the warranty status of the laptop.

Try updating SupportAssist:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=nfn97&oscode=wt64a&productcode=inspiron-15-5567-laptop

Many people report problems with SA.

Sometimes it is just best to go to your driver support page and manually download the updates.

I received a private message from "Dell-cares", saying:

"Hello, I’m your Dell virtual assistant. I see you've opened a thread. In order for me to review your system configuration, may I have the Service Tag / Express Service Code/ Order Number?   Refer the below link to find the Service Tag: https://goo.gl/qc4MY8"

Is this legitimate or should ignore the request?

The following posts might help here.

It's legitimate but you can ignore it. The request is more for confirming warranty or repair status.

Thanks to both of you.

First I installed most of the drivers manually using the link above, including the urgent BIOS update. Just one update wouldn't install for some reason. Then I tried uninstalling and reinstalling SupportAssist using the instructions using the link above.

SupportAssist nowseems to be working again and it tells me that all my drivers are up to date after installing a couple more.

Thanks again for your help. Very much appreciated.

[Edit - as I used both replies I'm not sure which to accept as the solution. Does it matter?]

A similar thing is happening to my one week old XPS 15 7590.

SupportAssist did run once (and undid the network configuration). The next time, it got stuck forever on "validating" and used up a lot of CPU.

Now, the application won't even open to allow it to be configured.

Can someone explain what the advantage is if any, in terms of keeping drivers and BIOS updated, between using SupportAssist and using Dell Update, or even going to the Dell Web site to check for new drivers? I would rather do my own clean-up, etc. and not have to reconfigure stuff after it runs.

Thanks!
