Harry, have you tried the old battery again after the replacement? Sometimes, removing and then replacing the battery while the laptop plugged in snd running has solved this problem. As stated by an earlier post, updating the BIOS has helped some also.

Hi all,

I do confirm that the BIOS update is mandatory to fix this problem. In fact the BIOS update for the Vostro 1000 (for my part) was specifically released for this problem. Don't be afraid to perform the update as the process has been greatly over the years ! It all happens in Windows and as long as the laptop is plugged in nothing should go wrong.

Voilà,

since me and other more  3 friends of mine that have same inspiron 1501 from same seller at almost same time  have this problem and looking on dell community there

are many posts related to the problem , it get obviously that it a dell general prob, even if in not recognized .

read more about my problem at http://www.myitarticles.com/2009/01/03/dell-battery-problem-not-recognized-cannot-be-charged/

Before any one does this just yet, FYI, it is good to be aware of the worst case scenario of what can happen if you go ahead and flash the BIOS.

Because, literally, the following just happened to me, oh, 2 hours ago after I saw the same message, "Warning: battery cannot be identified",  read what people had to say on here, and stupidly went ahead and and flashed  the Dell Inspiron 1501 System BIOS version 2.6.3, A16:

My motherboard crashed out and/or one of my memory chips. Luckily, not my hard drive (no, don't have an external HD - yet. As of 1.5 hours ago one is on order).

Luckily my laptop is still under warranty and they'll replace it for free.

I need the fried-out computer for study and to take test on in upcoming bar exam and fortunately, am able to eek out an existence on the school equipment until Dell sends out  a tech and parts.

They told me that flashing BIOS is the absolutely final, last resort step if everything else has been done. It is very risky to do.

My impatience, bullheadness, and ignorance cost me. What I should have done was call Dell tech support, sat through the annoying diagnostic process led by well-meaning but confusing techs.

Good luck!

Oh, and for what its worth, this is the second time in a row dell inspiron motherborrds have given me grief. 4 months in to owning my new computer at beginning of law school, the motherboard did the same thing and I suffered for months. I swore it would never happen again, ha.

i jusat observed that one of my RAM chips is not working , but seems that it`s notb actually fried , just that it doesn`t work . both slots seems to work and both chips are ok when run individually , but if i put them toghether only one of them seems to be considered . it`s from the motherboard i suppose ...

dell tried to solve the nVidia GPU problem ( "not related" to 1501  ) by releasing bios and drivers updates that din`t solve the manufacturing error ( it`s a hardware one   ) but altered the behaviour of all the sismem to mask the problems ..  anyway , on the long run seems that it fails to work

Flashing the BIOS to the one available as of today, 11/18/09, resolved this issue on the Inspiron 1501 I was working on for a client of mine.

I too am receving the battery warning message during start up but it also appears during usage while logged on for awhile. I have not uploaded any recent software but have continuous different issues. It just seems to be one thing after another with no resolution by Dell support. My laptop is an Insopiron 1545 and it is less than a year old. I will not ignore the message and will demand that Dell find a solution as I have purchased a maintance package from them although they never seem to be able to resolve an issue for any extended period of time, they continue to re-occur.

Thanks but I'm afraid that many of us should not be messing with the internals of our computers. I replaced the battery (see my earlier post dated 2/11/2009) and the problem / message went away.
