Win 10 v1903 update fails on Intel RST

Dell Inspiron 15-5578;    Windows 10 Home Edition , v1803

My Windows update to version 1903 fails as it says that the Intel RST driver (iastora.sys) is too old, and version 15.5.* or later is needed.

If I run the Dell Update utility it finds no new updates, and the Dell system info reports the Intel RST as version 17.0.2.1076  (ie should be ok for the win update)

If I run the Intel RST app and get the System Report it shows the version as 17.0.2.1076

If I find the iastora.sys file in c:\windows\system32\drivers  and show Properties>Details  it says the version is  15.2.0.1020   (ie too old for the win update)

Where do I go from here ?

Thanks !

Welcome to the Dell Community @dan61psu

Windows 10 May 2019 Update (build 1903) fails to install due to an out-of-date Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver:

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln318140/windows-10-may-2019-update-build-1903-fails-...

If the W10 update fails after updating the (Intel® RST) driver or if there is no updated driver for your model then you can work through the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder in Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the IASTORA.sys file.
  3. Right-click on the file and select Rename to change the filename to IASTORA.old
  4. Run the Windows May 10 2019 Update again.

If needed the latest (Intel® RST) driver can be found here:

@dan61psu

You do not need to update "IRST" to install the W10 1902.

I have a 2 year old Inspiron 15 5000 series laptop which is having this same problem.  When I look at System Information:

< Storage> shows the driver: c:\windows\system32\drivers\iastora.sys (15.2.0.1020, 776.99 KB (795,640 bytes), 5/24/2017 4:39 AM)

< Software Environment> shows iastora.sys Start Mode=Boot, State=Running

I am assuming this indicates this driver is active. Doesn't that imply it can't be renamed to ".old"?

What are my options to fix this?

Thanks for any advice. John

Welcome to the Dell Community  @TexasStarViewer

To better assist you, we would need the exact model number of your laptop/desktop???

Identify your Dell:

@TexasStarViewer

If the driver is active, it should show as a driver in the Device Manager.  The most obvious device which might use it is the SATA controller, so check its properties-Driver tab and Driver details.  All of mine show the iastorac.sys driver.

If you have some other SATA type device, you might check it also.

Even if it is being used, you can set the system to boot back into SAFE mode after the change.  That will keep it from jumping into the recovery options but we can discuss that after you see on which device the driver is active.  I have one system which is running the storahci.sys driver and will not reinstall the Intel SATA drivers.

By looking at msinfo32.exe, my laptop is model Inspiron 5567.

Under   Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\iastora.sys (15.2.0.1020, 776.99 KB (795,640 bytes), 5/24/2017 4:39 AM)

Under iastora.sys is showing State=RUNNING, Start Mode=Boot

The HD drive is a Toshiba .MQ01ABD100, which Amazon indicates is a SATA drive.

I visited the Intel website designated in the KB article but found no reference to an iastora.sys driver.

Thanks for any assistance. Regards, John

Windows 10  1903. The update failed error message "The inbox storage driver iastora.sys doesn't work on these systems and causes stability problems on Windows. Check with your software/driver provider for an updated version that runs on this version of Windows."

Current version is  17.5.2.1024  Date: 8/9/2019

and users of 14 15 16 are advised to update to the current version.

Both Microsoft and Intel have found an incompatibility between the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (build 1903) and certain versions of the Intel RST driver.
