Powerful hardware fan- suggest that issue persisted under Linux, however this firmware update (released today) fixed it for me: <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

So, I discovered that the Thermal Settings change PL1 (Long Duration) power limit.

Optimized – 22W

Cool – 15W

Quiet – 15W

Ultra Performance – 24W

These numbers look reasonable. They change (drop) with increasing temperature, but the temperature of what exactly – I don't know. Definitely not the CPU but some sensor farther from it.

Interesting observation: when CPU is hot enough, if I switch from "Ultra Performance" mode to "Quiet", I actually see increasing fan speed (and noise). So, if I need "quiet" work, the noise increases, but if I need performance (and don't mind noise), the noise actually decreases. This is nonsense and it shows that there is an error in Dell software.

Another observation is that fan speed doesn't depend on CPU temperature but on some other sensor that is somewhere away from the CPU. This behavior is wrong: it increases internal temperature and decreases components life. E.g. life span of flash memory (SSD) and Accumulators drops quite significantly in higher temperature.

I think Dell must fix this behavior ASAP and make fan sped dependent from CPU temperature instead of some other sensor. Or GPU temperature – what is hotter.

Hi!

My laptop is Precision 5550.

Same strange behavior here. Something is wrong with logic. I mostly need quiet mode. When I choose this one, noise increases. So for testing, I've switched to ultra performance mode and annoying fan became quieter.

I can see, that this problem is mentioned in another threads for moths, maybe yaers - but problem is not solved.

Does anyone from the Dell support look here at all?

Same machine and problem here.

The loudest fan occurs in 'quiet' mode.

I never see any evidence of the cpu speed getting reduced.  Even if I have nothing running.

My best option is to use to 'optimized' mode.

This is the quietest but unfortunately the fan cycles on and off every 3 seconds which is extremely annoying.

BTW this is with Dell Power Manager v3.9.0.

This has to be a bug.  Please help!

I've faced this problem two days ago on my Precision 7560. The problem seems to have gone after I've run full hardware scan with Support Assist and set "Use my preference emphasizing: Quality" in "Adjust Image Settings with Preview" in NVIDIA Control Panel.

I'm really curious what is the actual root cause.

@DELL-Jesse L:

You marked your 05-Apr-2022 suggestion <above> to upgrade to the Precision 7560 / 7760 BIOS v1.10.1 (rel. 28-Mar-2022) as the solution for this problem, but the original poster Coolbash has an Inspiron 5591 2-in-1.

The Inspiron 5591 2-in-1 support page <here> currently recommends the Inspiron 5491 / 5591 System BIOS v1.13.0 (rel. 22-Jan-2022).  Have any Inspiron users following this thread found that installing the latest BIOS firmware update for their Inspiron model now prevents their CPU from overheating when "Ultra Performance" is selected in Dell Power Manager v3.10.0?

I had several Dell laptops before, but the Inspiron 7590 (i7) is the only one with such strange behavior. It's hard to predict when the fan starts. Switching between "Optimized" and "Cool" stops the fan running. Sometimes around 60°C the fan is off, sometimes it is running. I have renewed the Thermal Paste, that seems to help, but temperature and fan RPM are unpredictable.

My BIOS 1.22.0, Dell Power Manager v 3.15.0, I have disabled the Turbo boost BIOS option. 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro.

@DELL-Jesse L I have the same problem with my Precision 7670 and it is updated to latest possible version of BIOS and other drivers..

The fans run too slow in performance mode and should run faster as they do if you switch to quiet mode.

Any solution to this problem?

Thank you.

Maybe what ultra performance does is realocate Power, so less fan Power, more CPU Power. It explain the heat and the fan quiet mode....Dell, intel...do not Care about useful life of components. They want us to buy 1 laptop every year. Maybe use some great kit cooler fan and 9° degrees ambient temperatura Will help 👽

I am using HWiNFO(R) 64 now to keep the fan noise under control. Of course at my own risk. Most of the time they  spin with 2200 rpm/s.

Same strange behaviour in Power Manager v3.16.0 on Precision 7680. Choosing "Ultra performance" gives quieter fans. It would be nice if Dell could explain exactly what this software is doing to the Fan Tables, and to the CPU, in each of these settings.

Same or similar issue with my Precision 5560, Ultra and optimized modes give good performance but slow fan speeds,i personally don't mind having loud fans so i switched to cool mode, the fans spin faster and continuously but for some reason this performance mods causes my gpu vram clocks to get stuck at 810MHz instead of 5501 MHz (RTX A2000) , i notice no difference in CPU performance tho.
