4000 display problem.

Hi
My inspiron has a display problem, the screen light works but the actual display shows nothing. There is no obvious damage to the screen or surround. I have taken apart and checked all wiring and it all seats properly in its sockets.
If I plug a monitor into the back the monitor shows the correct display.

Does any one have an idea of what to do next, could it just be the inverter? or is it most likely a dead screen.
The part number is 0978et (the IBM version), can this be replaced by any of the other screens that dell used on this model, or is each laptop configured to only use the same type. (Dell techs- Is this even the right type for this laptop).
And is there any self test prog that could isolate the issue?

Your best bet is to contact an LCD repair specialist - chances are the panel can be repaired at the board level, for less than the cost of replacement - far less expensive than replacing with a new panel, and less risky than buying a used panel (both in terms of assured fit, and that you know the panel is in good shape, which a used one may not be).

Interesting that this is an exact description of a problem I saw today on a ThinkPad 390e (problem began within the last few days, following a software patches installation).
