500m -- cannot remove the external FDD

This is my stepson's notebook and we cannot remove the FDD. The latch pops out OK but pulling doesn't release it. He claims that he pulls harder now then he did when it wasn;t stuck.

Is there a way to pry it out or do I have to take the system apart to see what's jammed?
