8200 refuses to recognize AC power; 7345U docking station power pins?
Let me start out by saying that I've looked through the forum going back a pretty long way and I'm still in need of some help from you guys. About a month ago, I was using my 8200 on AC power and the taskbar power icon suddenly changed to battery power. The battery was not discharging, but when I unplugged the AC adapter the computer immediately shut off. The computer will not turn on without a battery plugged in. My computer's been like this ever since. The battery slowly drained over a few weeks (on AC power the whole time), because the computer refuses to charge it. Once it reached 0%, the computer shut off. Now I can't turn on my computer at all. I disassembled the computer and jiggled around the battery charger board but it seems to be firmly seated and there is no obvious problem with any pins. I've tried a different PA-9 AC adapter, which works no better.
I have 2 questions:
1st: Do you think this is a physical problem with where the AC adapter plugs into the computer, or do you think the battery charger board is fried on a more fundamental level? My computer has always run pretty hot so the board may have been damaged. My computer spends 95% of its time sitting on my desk and I have never dropped it or tripped on the power cord.
2nd: I've considered buying a 7345U docking station and seeing if that fixes the problem. But I don't want to spend the money on it if it's not going to help. Has anyone solved a similar problem by using a docking station? And is there a way to hook up the PA-9 AC adapter directly to the place on the computer where the docking station plugs in, bypassing the docking station altogether?
Thanks so much for your help.

I have the same exact problem, I also have an 8200. I actually first had a problem with my internal speakers going in and out and my touchpad and eraser not working. I went like this for months deciding to just deal with it. Then I came across this thread...
"The palm rest issue is with the I8000, I8100 and I8200 as well as the Latitude and Precision versions. In these models, the connection to the palm-rest often would come loose, or come off. The palm-rest has the speakers, ( the headphone socket still works ) the touchpad, ( the touchstick may not work with out it ) and the NVram battery. You can have all go wrong, or if just loose only 1 thing may happen. The conection is beside the KBD connection, 4 screws to take the KBD out. It doesnt have to be unplugged. It often will happen after replacing the HDD, most likely caused by the thump being placed upside down. As it was working before the assumption is that it is a driver problem. I have answered many posts about this, and have rarely been wrong." -- Aussie Chris
So I took my keyboard off and found this to be true. After pushing it back together I turned my computer on and found my touchpad finally working again and the speakers working fine. The only problem is that this did not fix my AC/battery problem.
So when I plug my AC cord in it does absolutly nothing. My computer runs fine off of battery, but I can not charge my batteries or run the comp off of AC. Also I do have a port replicator figuring it might be the AC connection into the computer. STILL NOTHING. So let me know if you figure it out because I can not. But to the best of my knowledge it is def a hardware problem not a software issue.

Hi,
I think I have a similar problem. My computer was working fine and all of the sudden it stopped using the AC power supply. It boots fine and works fine from the battery (which is almost dead) but it won't charge the battery and it always is in "battery" mode even when plugged in.
The little green light on the adapter comes on when it is plugged in. If this is not an adapter problem and is a computer problem what needs to be replaced? Is is common for the adapters to die?
I have an Inspiron 2650. thanks, Leigh
