8500 SCREEN BURN!!!

I got my laptop a week ago (7 days).  I use it M-F.  I have a screen saver after 15 minutes.  I have VERY BAD SCREEN BURN!  I can see the outline of my Outlook and IE windows in XP and the same outlines in RH8.  Is this normal?  Can I fix it? What do I need to do?

Laptop screens should not burn in images.  I have never see one do it beyond a few seconds.

However you SHOULD set your computer to turn off the screen instead of activating a screen saver.  This will preserve the life of your backlight as well as allow for a cooler idle.

what screen you use ?

WXGA? WSXGA? WUXGA?

LCD's I believe are like impossible to get screen burn because of the way they work...

it sounds like the modulators that control the current flow which in turn control the properties of the crystals aren't working properly, leaving your LCD with a memory.

It shouldn't work that way- sounds like the fab plant produced a bad sheet. Of course, now you have to consider if it's worth replacing.

After talking to dell for an hour, and spending an hour at the dentist...it's was gone.  Now after slight use, it's coming back...Ideas anyone?

Wuxga Screen.  I am certainly not a novice.  I have never seen this happen like this before in a laptop.  Windows close, images stay.

My UltraSharp on my I8200 has a screen burn around the entire edge of the screen from my maximized IE windows being open the majority of the time, as well. I just didn't really care that much and don't want to send it in to Dell Repair because two of my friends and my brother both sent in Dell laptops for repair (real reliable, eh?) and all three of them were sent back units with specs that didn't match their original or hard drives that failed soon after. One got back an XGA screen in his Inspiron when he originally had an UltraSharp like mine that got burnt out. So I'm not too keen on sending my laptop in to fix a few issues that I can live with.

Overseas dell support is really really bad.  They did not even understand what screen burn is.  Well, I ordered a new unit, EXACTLY like the other one.  If it happens to the new one, i'll switch to Toshiba.  Anyway, I'll call and get an RA before my 30 days runs out.

I thought with RTD (Return to Depot), you are supposed to remove the battery, mediabay, harddrive, and memory before sending it in. At least in the States, I'm pretty sure you can upgrade your RTD warranty to onsite anytime during the life of your warranty.

If you have a Notebook and can get On-Site Complete Care.
It's worth every penny, and isn't that expensive.

3 years of On-Site Complete Care means.
Anytime within that 3 years your Notebook breaks or
is dropped gets stepped on gets liquid spilled on it
just about anything other than being stolen.
It will be repaired or replaced. It's worth the extra $$
per year to not end up with a boat anker if something really bad happens.

If you don't have Complete Care and spill your coffee on it.
That's damage you caused, it's not covered under regular warranty.
YOU have to buy the parts to repair it, which FAR exceeds any cost
of the extended warranty.

I'm pretty much betting that even if you left it on the
hood of your car and took off down the freeway and it
splatters into a million peices, MIGHT be covered with Complete Care.

Why hassel with packing up your lappy and sending it in?
When you can have them come to you.
That's also well worth the low cost of the extended warranty.

I don't work for Dell. I just don't think this point gets pushed enough.
People for the most part pass up on that offer in a gamble that they won't need it.
But you never know, if your at a friends house and have cables plugged in strung across the floor and the dog/kid comes running through and jerks your lappy across the room like a frisbe into the wall.
You'll wish you had. Unfortunatly, they don't offer this everywhere.

Everybody says that LCD don't get screen burn - well I can tell you that they DO. I know because it has happened to me!
I had a Dell LCD display that got screen burn - it had the login box burnt on to it!

LCD do get screen burn but they say it isn't forever - however I never did get rid of the login box burnt in image.

Here are some links that state that LCD do have screen burn [they were very hard to find!]:

[There's also a lot of posts in the forums on this topic - just do a search to find them]

My LCD screen burn went away when I had to take my I8100 apart to replace the motherboard.  I also installed a new HD with a new OS.  Don't know what step solved the screen burn, but it's completely gone now - strange???

LISTEN EVERYONE

This is what was referred to a while ago as a "watermarking" effect. I e-mailed dell through the online request for damaged parts (BECAUSE IT IS DEFECTIVE) and they ended up replacing the whole computer because other things were defective as well. No matter what, this is covered under warranty, under all cases you will need to send in your laptop and they will replace the screen, this is very important, do it before your warranty is up. This phenomenon is caused by poor construction of the LCD, it also makes the LCD look yellow, I could tell this when I placed the new and old computer side by side. None of this was caused by the user or shipping therefore it is covered under warranty, like I said before. Make sure to get it replaced immediately. Phone support is junk, if you use http://support.dell.com/dellcare/MissingWrongDamaged.aspx <---that form, they will send you e-mails and you can get everything done with a tech rep through e-mail, please do this, it can take a while and can be a hassle but it is totally worth it, I had one dead pixel before, and I have one now, both are/were in spots which I never notice. If you do not get a response through the form after about 48 hours, enter the information again.
