To check if your Laptop is defective is to turn it on and play with it and if something is not right, try fixing it, if it's not fixable then it's defective. You can't tell if your laptop is defective out of the box.

If it is a Dell you can run the diagnostics. Press F12 at boot and select Diagnostics. They will check many but not all potential problems.

You can also download the diagnostics if the above procedure does not work.
