AMD Graphics Card not getting detected

Hi All,

My Laptop model is: Dell Inspiron 15R. It has Intel HD 4000 and AMD 7670M Graphic Card, but only Intel HD 4000 card is detected when I scan for configuration in www.canyourunit.com This means AMD graphic card will not be used during game play ? what should I do to make the AMD card  will be detected when we scan for configuration.

Thanks in advance

Answer 1.

You can use a free utility like GPU-Z or AMD's own AMD System Monitor - basically once the card is in use, you'll see a rise in it's core temperatures, core frequency, and memory use.

Answer 2.

Haven't seen this, I'll Google the symptom see if I can find something that might help in resolving.

What version of Catalyst Drivers are you running?

No need to consider UnifL, that's an extreme that I recommend to people that are at wits end.

In general once people figure out how to get the Catalyst Drivers working with their "Enduro" discrete cards it works.

It's just that AMD/Intel is a mess adding to that Dell is of now help with getting up-to-date drivers out as well. AMD is working hard and fast to correct past issues the OEM's that use their cards not so much :(.

Problem is when is Dell going to release updated drivers to make it easier for their users?

It's crazy that they are always behind.  Ergo reason why there is leshcat and why AMD just doesn't shut him down.  Doing a service that OEM's refuse to do themselves.

But, keep this in mind if you read on the internet about AMD/Intel Graphics setups Dell isn't the only one having issues, most if not all other vendors are in the same boat.

Cheers

If you look at the current lineup of 15R systems (5521), the AMD chip seems to be gone - they're all Intel-only.

Looks like they shifted the AMD discrete GPU along with an Intel HD IGP over to their SE Line only now.

So you can still get a 15R with an AMD it seems.  www.dell.com/.../fs

True CyberMaxX360, when I spoke to Tech Support and shouted about the drivers issue, they are not much worried about fixing the issue. I knew AMD System Monitor can be used to monitor graphic card usage, I asked even If I knew the answer to the Tech Support guy, he said there isn't any software/utility that we know which can give the usage details and even he asked his supervisor  and even he don't know, I was surprised as they don't know any kind of s/w which can help.

Coming back to the topic, I formatted my system and reinstalled everything, but this time in orderly fashion which you've suggested in the one of the posts. Now I assigned Battled Field 3 to High Performance and saved it, and I started AMD System Monitor, I see the AMD Usage graph ( I's really happy to see that AMD Card is invoked for the game play).

Now again I gave a try with Tomb Raider 2013 game just to get whether it is working for this game too or not.

One thing is -

when I started game I don't see AMD Graphic card in Display Drop down list- shown as below (

I assigned High Performance in CCC :

Now during game play as I said AMD Graphic card is not invoked, the graph is flat lined on AMD System Monitor.

After I close the game after the game play. CCC asks again to add the TombRaider exe to CCC again :(

as shown below:

CCC shows as NOT ASSIGNED again:

Did you see this kind of behavior with CCC ???? it works for Battlefield and doesn't work for Tomb Raider. any help/ideas in this ??

Sai -

First are you using Dells drivers?  They happen to be a bit old, as I stated I have no idea why they are lagging on releasing newer drivers based on the newest AMD reference drivers, it would stop more then 3/4 of the questions being asked here on the forums.

Next, quick overview on how that AMD Discrete GPU (dGPU) works in you system along with the Intel HD Integrated Graphics Processor (iGP).    The AMD can only handle "Rendering Tasks" it has no "Display Port" Technology built into it, it must rely on the Intel HD to provide that service.  That is to say, the AMD card is not physically connected to any Display Ports nor is it physically or directly connected to the Display Panel.

This is the reason why one can not just disable the Intel HD iGP (a few years ago systems built with switchable graphics had two full GPU's with a physical electrical switch(MUX) in place that switched which card had direct access to the display ports. Today, these systems are MUXless there is no physical electrical switch only one card has access to the Display Ports and Display Panel, that being the Intel HD iGP.

This is the reason why applications have no knowledge of the AMD dGPU as most applications generally check which display device is physically connected to the display port.

So on to your questions.

1) Glad to hear you have Battlefield 3 Going, it's an older game been out for a while, but the main fact is your setup is working in this instance.

2) Tomb Raider 2013 setup - see my explanation above one why it only sees the Intel HD

3) Haven't seen this, but then again don't know what version of AMD's driver your running - if it's Dell, its OLD! and probably the reason why it doesn't like adding newer applications. :(

Note: I have seen some games that actually use a "Wrapper" the .EXE that starts the game isn't actually the game's .EXE itself, it just starts the game, does a splash screen, perhaps setups a configuration file and then passes control to another .EXE. Maybe start up task manager not the .EXE's that are running, then start Tomb Raider 2013 get fully into the game, toggle back over to Task Manager and note what new .EXE's are running.

I also correspond with a Dell Liaison often, posted a PM asking what's the deal with Dell releasing newer AMD drivers hopefully when he has time he'll answer.

Cheers

EDIT: Also, you may want to look at this thread here - lots of 14r/15r/17r users participate in it (it's quite long indeed) don't bother starting on page one, go to the last page read the thread backwards for currently relevant information.  One thing, there are posts from people on how they got the most current Intel Drivers and most current AMD reference 13.x (WHQL and/or BETA) drivers working on their systems instead of using the Dell provided Old Drivers :D

What exactly did the Pop-up window state (Post Screen Shot) -

Looking at your log file

1) I see you ran it a few times:

[04/21/13 15:50:29] Update Package Execution Started
[04/21/13 15:53:46] Update Package Execution Started

2) It created a Text file that may have more information so can you navigate to and  post the information that is contained in the following file:
    [04/21/13 15:56:38] Open file: C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdatePackage\Log\Video_Driver_DY8P8_WN_8.982.6.0_A02.txt

3) Each time it ran it looks fine to me as I see Result Codes of '0', Error Codes of '0' and Exit Codes of 'SUCCESS'
[codes of 0 generally means no errors detected]

I did the same thing about WRAPPER around .EXE for tomb raider, I didn't see new process created for the game after the splash screen. I did this exercise already. I installed Dell's AMD Drivers meaning this is VERY OLD :( , as I said earlier I installed new INTEL HD 4000 drivers from INTEL site. Probably the only way to check is  uninstall AMD and give it a try. Drivers for  INTEL are new so I wouldn't uninstall them. Reference from this link:

www.thinkdigit.com/.../158133-dell-inspiron-14r-15r-17r-turbo-laptop-thread-87.html

Link for 13.1 AMD Drivers:

www2.ati.com/.../13-1_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe

Question 1:

The post is little confusing because he says not to install CCC from 13.1 version, any reason why ?

Question 2:

Can you tell me how to neatly uninstall AMD Drivers ?

Thanks CybersMax for the help.

@superstar007 - anything marked unknown device?

April 22nd, 2013 12:00

@superstar007 it would seem from the message popup that the only thing that the package thinks it needs to update is the Intel Media component.  What does "Device Manager" show under "Display Adapters" do you see the AMD card? If so, right click on it, select properties, look under the "General" Tab is there any error codes? Also, look under the "Driver" tab what version # does it display?

@saikiran939 -

Answer #1  - no reason not to, read the comment under what was "Quoted" under that link (page 87 that you referenced above) The AMD 13.X drivers has improved their "Enduro" technology, in fact CCC UI changed to allow much better control. As the person commented below the Quote, they installed the complete package with no issues.

Answer #2 -

Depends on what version of Windows 7? or 8? as procedures are slightly different.

Side Note: In a few of my posts around here for folks who have this Intel/AMD setup and whom seem very frustrated that it isn't working well or working at all for that matter. l I have pointed them to this site here http://leshcatlabs.net. The site provides a service that OEM's such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, and many others for some reason fail to do and that is supplying updated AMD drivers for their units in a timely fashion.  This site is well known amongst the community read the comments on his page.

Noted: It Looks like as of his 13.3 beta 3 drivers he now has them "Signed" perhaps keep an eye on this site for when he releases a stable version, since leshcat keeps very much up-to-date.  No need to put windows into "Test/Water Mark Mode"  now if using his drivers totally up to you.

In any case, one thing that you may find useful if you don't want to use the leshcat drivers, is the "manual" located here http://leshcatlabs.net/manual/ read the section on "Removing previous Branded/Custom Drivers" read it over at least twice to fully understand what needs to be done, NOTE the difference between Windows 7 and 8 procedures. (I had to read it a few times myself)

You'll need the free version of Treexy Driver Fusion to totally cleanup the AMD Drivers no need to purchase the premium version.

Since you have the latest Intel Drivers, no need to use Driver Fusion to uninstall them as well.  Just follow the procedures in that manual to remove AMD's stuff.

If your running Windows 7 you may want to make sure that you have the latest .NET 4.0 framework installed - google for it, or search Microsoft's site.

Then, use the 13.1 link that you posted, but go ahead and install CCC as others stated in the other forum it does work and you do want the benefits that the new CCC provides to Enduro Class AMD Cards as well.

Cheers

@CyberMax,

I tried installing newer version 13.1 drivers after following removing procedure, the installation failed with Driver Installation Failed error, I've no idea why it failed. It seems that 13.1 is not supported for 7670M Graphic Card. Hard Luck.

Driver Install: the installation failed

May be I should give it a try with UniFL.

Thanks,

Sai,

In that case UniFL 13.3 Beta 3 would be the best choice as it is a "Signed" driver and you wouldn't have to put your Windows 8 or Windows 7 OS into "Test / Watermark Mode" - basically the way you get unsigned 64 bit drivers to install (test / watermark mode will make the OS less Secure)  - 13.3 Beta 3 from Leshcat doesn't need that requirement now.

EDIT: Post the failed Install log from 13.1 if you can :)
