Audio is not working
I have recently purchased Inspiron N4010 laptop.
Sound is not coming suddenly and I have tried all reinstalling latest drivers but all are vain.
It says Speakers are not plugged in but it is internal and even external headphone is not working.
Give your solutions!!!
Is it something rectified or I should contact Dell techies and hand over my laptop to do something.

Hello,
I have an Inspiron 1720 with Vista 32-bit.....couple of days ago had the great idea of upgrading the audio drivers for no reason since my audio was working....after downloading the latest drivers from the Dell Support Center site and installing it I ended up without sound and for some reason the machine would not let me roll back....now I got a red cross over the speaker icon at the bottom right of the monitor, and when I click on it I get the message "NO AUDIO DEVICE IS INSTALLED".....although Device Manager says that my audio card is working properly !
Help anyone ?
Thanks in advance.

Stephen,
It appears that your Realtec audio driver is not installed. Your sound control panel should say Realtec, not just "high definition".

Stephen, I do not have Realtek but I found this picture on the web which shows how I believe it should look:
Maybe not exactly like that, but with the words "Realtek High Definition Audio". When only the words "High Definition Audio" appear, that suggests to me that the Realtek driver is not installed for some reason and that Windows is using its generic HD audio driver instead.
Try going to the Control Panel and see if the Realtec driver is there. If so, look for a mark indicating there there is a problem with it. If there is such a mark then right click on the driver name and select "update driver". Do not let Windows look for. Instead, browse to the driver cache on the hard drive, which is
c:\dell\drivers\R...
Browse to the audio driver you downloaded. If it is not there then either it was not unzipped after downloading or it was unzipped to a non-default location. If you downloaded the current driver for Windows 7 & Vista, its location should be c:\dell\drivers\R272187. For more about audio drivers see The Audio Driver Facts FAQ.
But even if Windows is using its generic audio driver, you still should have audio. You might want to run the Dell Diagnostics audio tests to make sure the hardware is okay.

I am having a similar issue with an Inspiron 4010. After a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate an installing the hardware drivers I am getting a "no speakers or headphones are plugged in error.
It appears that the HD audio that is listed in device manager is for the HDMI output which is working. I have tried installing the Realtek drivers from both Dell and Realtek's sites and have determined that windows is not detecting that the internal speakers are attached. I have searched several forums and threads to find a solution with out success. I seems that the on board audio has been disabled in the bios which does not give you the option to re-enable it.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Try installing the basic audio driver in Windows instead of the Realtek driver. If still no audio then it is not a driver problem but some other issue.
Section 6 of the Audio Driver FAQ.
