I had same problem and fixed it by checking the "1 enable SPDIF" box on the Advanced controls for volume control dialog box which is accessed from the Advanced button on the volume control dialog box (the one with the sliders for all of the various audio ports).
I guess the audio is transfered from the laptop to the docking station digitally so the digital out of the audio module has to be enabled.
